It's that time of year again, my renewal price has gone up by 30%
I know everything is more expensive right now, but 30% increase that seems excessive.

Nothing has changed in my circumstances and I've checked all the usual comparison sites and they're all the same.

Bloody hell... That's all.

As an old fart, with an old car, mine didn't move. Dropped my son off the insurance for a 10 year old Aygo, as that jumped from £600 to £800 in November. Kept it the same as son more expensive than daughter who is provisional (son has own car and company van).

My renewal seems to only go up now, every year. But when ever I search around I can get a better deal. Seems to be standard practice for all insurance companies.

Mine's gone down for 2 yrs running (LV, who were brilliant at dealing with the aftermath of me being tail-ended). Always found them to be cheaper than comparison sites, who obviously want their cut of the deal.

I just had my renewal and it was the same as last year. However thought I’d do the comparison sites to check the competition and the cheapest ones were all at least £100 more, so stuck with existing provider.

Annual merry go round for me again. Similar % increase to you OP but did the usual comparison through topcashback and my insurance is now less than last year again.

Will have a better look at options in the next week or so.

Currently with Flow (who are an LV company...)

£380 last year, £520 this year, same provider nearly £800 on the Meercats. No change of circumstance. Ended up with better cover and significantly lower excess for £500.

My existing policy went up by 30% for renewal.

Money super wombat or whatever it was got me back to just under last year's premium. Mrs gd saved a similar proportion by the same route.

Depends what you drive maybe and how the stats have gone in your postcode etc lately.

I had a massive hike, then I swapped one for a new car and it went up more. Sadly because it was so close to renewal I had to phone up and the figure I got was lower than anything on comparison sites.

Does your car have keyless entry? Insurers have finally twigged that they get nicked all the time.

Similar here OP.

The renewal notices are a nice reminder, but never set the final price.

The last couple of years mine went down, then it went about the same. This year I think it was up by a similar % to yours. Maybe more. .

Doing the comparison sites led to some quotes a bit lower, some wildly higher.

About 15 days before renewal date I called my insurer and got a quote cheaper than the renewal one and higher than last year’s and within £10 of any other.

‘Do you want to auto renew’? 🤣🤣 I don’t think so.

Could this be why there’re so many driveways near me with those rise and fall posts?

Oddly, I added 'aftermarket alloys' to my policy, and it went DOWN 12 pence....!

Have you asked them why?
Annual discussion with Direct Line, they always find a discount that can be applied 🙂

Is that true about local car theft stats? I seem to live in the UK capital of T5s and Land Rovers, the local facebooks are full of stolen vehicle posts. Sigh.

Yes, of course the frequency and amount of local claims has an impact on your insurance. If there is a lot of local claims, then you are more likely to make a claim than if you lived somewhere with very few theft claims.

DrP

I understood that that was because they perceived people who accessorised their car, as opposed to upping the power, were more likely to look after them.  I used to get a discount for subscribing to a VW enthusiasts magazine when I had a camper.

I asked my insurer what would the price change be if I fitted a towbar. They said probably a slight price drop or neutral. I presume it helps with slow speed rear impacts.

Now I'm thinking of fitting a couple more on the front.

I'm convinced it's essentially a random number generator

Many years ago, I rang to add the previous MrsIHN (at the time GirlfriendIHN) to my policy. I had a 1.3 Golf, she had a 1.3 Golf, both cars same age, insured with the same company. I insured mine for £400, she insured hers for £300, as she had a women-specific policy thing and was deemed a lower risk. They wanted another £400 to add her to mine, as she deemed a higher risk, as she was under 25...

Anyone who does low mileage, like me, I can recommend ByMiles. Flat annual fee (£150 for me), plus an amount for the miles you do, paid each month. Mine ranges from £6 to £26 (that was 900 miles)
First time in many years I've stayed with the same insurance co 3 years in a row.
(We'll also get about £100 off if you get a referral, so worth PMing me 🙂 )

Tow bars can make cars a total loss very easily as they take the impact and then bend the car.

Probably just think you are boring old fart who wants to tow a caravan 🙂

My insurance went up this year despite me no longer using the car to commute and dropping the mileage. It just appears to be a con.

It seems like an annual game.
Aviva last week said the renewal was going from £169 to £236 for my wifes car. Would have phoned them to negotiate but they were useless when a pheasant smashed her windscreen a few weeks ago so didn't bother.
Moved to the AA for £175 but higher mileage and lower excess.
