Hey, it’s my birthday today! There have been many like it, but this one is special because it’s today. It’s been a crazy year, but then there have been some crazy birthdays over the years. The first birthday I had after moving to Todmorden was in 2002 (20 years ago!) and Paul Turner (inventor of Rockshox and then Maverick bikes) turned up for my birthday weekend. I’d told him to dress for cold weather, to which he replied ‘Hey, I live in Colorado, I know all about cold weather…’ – and so he turned up in a wool jersey, nylon windshell and those knitted cycling tights with the rainbow cuffs that you got in old school cycling shops. Oh, and summer race shoes. Needless to say, after two hours of riding he said ‘Hey! I’m having a great time, but is this ride nearly over as I can’t feel my feet or hands anymore…’ Ahh… he still talks fondly of that day.
