The race takes place from Jun 12th over 4 days and 300km, encountering humid jungles in the south of the country before venturing into mountainous tea plantations and across the Horton Plains (who?), the island’s highest plateau. It then finishes in the ‘cultural capital’ of Sri Lanka, the magnificently named Kandy.

It’s a single category event for 2016, with prizes in excess of $10,000 – which certainly isn’t to be sniffed at. The whole shebang comes complete with 3*+ hotel accommodation, 3 meals per day and full race support, nutrition by Torq, mechanics and masseurs. Cor. And there are still a few places available! It costs $1,895, and entries will close on April 30th, unless it sells out before then. You can enter and get more details here.

Barney Marsh takes the word ‘career’ literally, veering wildly across the road of his life, as thoroughly in control as a goldfish on the dashboard of a motorhome. He’s been, with varying degrees of success, a scientist, teacher, shop assistant, binman and, for one memorable day, a hospital laundry worker. These days, he’s a dad, husband, guitarist, and writer, also with varying degrees of success. He sometimes takes photographs. Some of them are acceptable. Occasionally he rides bikes to cast the rest of his life into sharp relief. Or just to ride through puddles. Sometimes he writes about them. Bikes, not puddles. He is a writer of rongs, a stealer of souls and a polisher of turds. He isn’t nearly as clever or as funny as he thinks he is.
