This jacket is Sugoi’s flagship mountain bike offering, constructed from Polartec NeoShell. As you’d expect with a premium price tag, it has taped seams and waterproof zips. Black isn’t the colour of choice when you want to stand out during those dark rides but Sugoi has done an honourable job of incorporating reflective strips in all of the right places. The fit is not slim racer, nor is it too loose, instead it’s just about right for layering up.
The RSX is full of features – too many to list – but one that stands out for me is a detachable hood that is just big enough to fit over a helmet. I’m a fan of hoods on jackets, but it can be easily removed if you’re not. There are three smallish pockets that don’t interfere with a pack but can house essentials. One last thing I’d like to mention before moving on to the performance is the way the hem drawcord is secured. Sugoi uses a clamming-style cleat with no moving parts, as used by sailors for years – the cord passes through and is placed inside the jaws. We did have a problem with a seam coming unstuck; CSG says it was a one-off and replaced the jacket, though.
So the RSX has lots of nice features, but why the enormous price tag? It’s the fabric and performance. NeoShell claims to be one of the most breathable, waterproof fabrics on the market and so far I have to agree it is definitely up there. During heavy downpours and long uphill pushes I’ve stayed dry and comfortable. During a recent race I had a pretty heavy crash and the NeoShell shrugged it off with just a little rip. Without doubt it saved my skin.
Overall: Very pricey, but worth considering if performance is key.
