When it comes to bombproof bike racks the Pendle wheel support rack takes some beating. We opted for the Type Approval two bike model which attaches to your car by way of a plate that bolts behind a two bolt tow bar. Each bike sits in two D-loops which hold its wheels while a vertical bar provides a fixing point for the seat tube too. A lighting board is an integral part of the design. The rack needs assembling but from opening the boxes to putting the bikes on the back took only about 30 minutes of fettling, which we’d say was fairly straightforward. Our rack came with wider three inch D-loops (make sure you mention them when ordering) which have accepted both XC and downhill wheels with no problems. Pendle offer kits to expand to a three or four bike rack if you need to in the future.
In use the rack can be quickly adjusted to the wheelbase of different bikes, the vertical bars and three straps per bike ensure they’re held securely, and we’ve yet to fi nd a bike that doesn’t fit quickly and easily. A D-loop on the tow bar plate offers somewhere to lock the bikes to for motorway stops ensuring peace of mind while you’re stocking up on post-ride Ginsters and coffee. Fuel economy isn’t unduly affected thanks to the bikes being tucked out of the way behind your vehicle. The only adaptation we’ve made is to add a small bit of pipe lagging to the vertical bars to protect bike paintwork from rubbing.
Overall: A solid and bombproof bike rack that’ll hold any bike with a minimum of fuss. Well worth considering if you value your bike and travel to rides or races a lot.
