The time seems to be due (already) for my Wazoo’s headset to be sorted out.
Has anyone replaced or repaired the headset bearings on these thing yet?
If you did, what did you find in there? A cartridge bearing, or the fiddly ball-race type thing?
If it’s a ball-race, I’m minded to replace it with a cartridge bearing anyway. Some kind of seal is better than none.

The answer seems to be cheap-o no-seal cartridge bearings pressed in to the frame. The steerer tube is 1.125″ straight, and the OD of the bearing is 1.75″. They needed a tiny bit of persuasion to come out of the frame:

    Image of the bearing.

The angled surface doesn’t seem to be important in terms of the mechanical fit between bearing and frame, the inside of the headtube is machined to about 9.5mm deep and the bearing only contacts about 3.4mm of that surface. The bearings seem to be identical top and bottom, and do not have any numbers etched on them.

I’ve had the Wazoo since early March, and I’ve only done about 250 miles on it. It’s still on the poor side for the headset bearings to be goosed so soon.

I’m off the LBS to see about some bearings which keep water out.

1.75 = 44 ish mm, would I be right in saying that one of hope sheadset would fit to convert the frame to run a 1.5 inch fork.?

You may be correct neilsonheels, although I don’t feel 100% qualified to give you a definitive answer. Perhaps this may be of assistance:

I’ve visited my LBS, and left with what looks like a pair of Hope’s “S.H.I.S. : ZS44/28.6” (see above link, the diagram on page 3, second from the left). They say it’s a common thing with bikes at that end of the market, and a cheap upgrade for reasonably-weatherproof bearings.
The important bit is there are cartridge bearings with suitable seals, the bearings are 36 degree angular contact types, 30mm ID. Suits me because I’m not changing the forks.

It’s the same size headtube as on my Bizango and I have a 44mm/1’5″ headset in mine to run a tapered fork.

Haven’t done it with the Wazoo yet but I probably will at some point.

Ah, so blutoable! Or at least not like to straight steerer forks only.

Any ideas on max tyre size? 4 inch or maybe larger with a 1×10 setup?

I did email halfords customer service on August 2nd about what headset they use. They sent me a reply today:

We use the FSA No.11N Headset – 1 1/8″ on the VooDoo Wazoo.

    For reference, that’s all.

Sorry to bump this old thread but my headset has finally died & the above link doesn’t look like the one on mine.

Any recommendations for a new headset? I’ve heard Superstar components or Hop (obviously) would be amongst my best options.

My lbs fitted a Hope when installing the On One Fatty Carbon Fork for me, £75 all in, no doubt there are cheaper options.

Cheers mate. Ended up buying a Superstar one in lime green last night
