I currently ride my carbon 456 16″ with 1 1/8″ steerer fork but wanted to know why I can’t use a tapered steerer fork ???? As on one don’t recommend????

Ah – this is because of the mismatch between the short head tube, and the size of taper on some forks…

On-One will have a range of headsets that angle adjust 1.125in steerers, and a range that work as intended with tapered and even 1.5in steerer forks shortly.

So Brant I definatley cannot change my current forks (1 1/8″) steerer for some tapered ones???? C456 frame Is approx 4 months old?
Also Brant can I have the gloss laquar stripped off my frame so that it’s a Matt finish rather than the gloss???

I’m in the bath and typing on my phone. So apologies.
16in frames have a head tube that’s too short for some models of tapered fork. This is because there is no standard for the length of taper and it would seem that the designers of the c456 were caught short.

There is a fix with a taller external top headset cup which I think is only prototype at this time. I will check. Only been back since 1st August and a lot to catch up on!

You can’t strip the laquer off as I understand, but you could overspray with Matt laquer I think? Best to just get it muddy.

    More info tommorow.

I’ve got one of the prototype external headset upper cups. Not used it yet as ended up keeping my 1 1/8th forks. Unfortunately no where near as sleek looking as the original zero stack upper. I wish they hadn’t cocked up.

As for the matte finish – gentle (and I mean gentle) keying of the laquer with very fine wet and dry (P1200) and then a satin lacquer would probably be best.

There has been reports of problems with tapered Rock Shox forks and the C456. I have not read anything about issues with Fox forks.

So are fox fork’s (tapered steerer) ok with 16″ c456????
