all round London I see these and I felt compelled to highlight I think it has to do with us all laying out our rubbish and recycling as if this is not a encouragement – nothing is – love to no if anyone else sees these in your area ?

100 rat complains a day on london council recycling belt 30.11.17

    its all displayed on-line
    not pulling your leg
bringing in humour as i decline
in highgate the predictions were a beg.
    all were for the reduction
only now is a bad taste
its recycling that is the production
slipping all minds were daily waste.
    storing up rubbish
    while recycling did increase
every uk street was the nourish
now rats out number save the earth police.
    you have yourself to blame
    with me don’t contradict
    all on-line with shame
clearly with this i did predict.
if we don’t want to dispose
thinking saving all is the winner
its obvious rats will smell a rose
because on every street we lay out dinner.

Not very often. Only at spring tides when they are flushed from the rock armour on the sea wall.

Think OP is suggesting that current recycling practice is causing an infestation of Rattus Norvegicus.

100 rats a day you say?
not round here, not my way
Along the canal I occasionally see
    rattus rattus running free
    Although it must be said
it’s mostly when other folks are in their bed!

‘Tis a very odd first post. Still, the world needs more poetry, including the 6th form stuff.

I can’t ever recall seeing a rat in the wild.

I did have a pet albino rat as a kid though, RIP Squeak.

    None.

But I saw one the other day in Livingston, next to a pond, so big we were debating if it was an Otter or Beaver . 😯

I’ve seen a few. I sometimes ride past a piggery on the Mersey bank. Prime rat habitat I suppose. Not seen them anywhere else though. And I’ve still never seen a badger…

Quite a few out when riding in farmland, but usually squashed on the road. I remember seeing a huge one flattened on Green Lanes, ridiculously long but then it had been rolled out by a 29 bus-shaped rolling pin.
Back then I knew some people who worked on the sewers and they had some (apocryphal) tales about sightings of ‘queen’ rats via the remote controlled buggy/video camera things they inspected the pipes with.

Last winter, descending a farm track in the dark, a jabali (Spanish wild boar) came crashing out of the hedgerow, and was trotting along next to me for a few seconds while we both wondered what to do. Thankfully it wasn’t being chased by a man with a shotgun.

See plenty out here in the wilds, it’s a rare night ride that i don’t see a rat. I also see several owls, kestrels, kites and buzzards. Plenty of sign of foxes though only see them very late on or as kits. I wonder if it’s all linked, like some sort of chain.

It’s London, what do you expect?
I see hardly any here in rural North Yorkshire, even around farms (of which we have lots) I see more squashed ones on the road than live ones.

    Never.

Red deer, roe deer, red squirrels, pine marten, badger are all pretty frequently seen. Occasional adder or lizard during the warmer months. Shrews etc if you’re sharp-eyed enough.

OP – rats have always lived with humans. If you remember, before we left our recycling out, we left our bins out. Nothing to do with ‘save the earth’ people.

Nowadays we put our food waste in separate closable brown bins, which seems to reduce animal related rubbish incidents dramatically.

I see rats on night rides, sometimes living naturally in the countryside too. And foxes.

Also seen mice out riding, away from humans. Saw something last night although not sure what it was. Very very tiny but seemed to have a tail. Shrew perhaps?

I regularly see foxes, pine martins, deer, wild boar, mice, badgers es and raccoons while out riding at night but the only rat I have seen was living behind the dishwasher in our kitchen. 😯

For around the last 15 years I’ve seen lots of rats hanging out at the edge of the river/stream that runs near to Morrisons.

About 37 years ago I used to hang out around the banks of the Kennet and again saw lots of rats, some exceptionally large.

But… perhaps James Herbert was a prophet and somewhere out there is a two-headed bugger just biding its time…

September/october time there’s loads of squashed rats on my commute, normally out in the countryside though, never in the city.
