A lavender-hued 1989 Saracen Eiger Competition. All original, I had one back in the day til it went AWOL one night. I picked up this one on ebay this year for next to nothing. I might even ride it one day!

Mattig, the Marin you seek is the Palisades, I think. You can usually find them on ebay.

1997 scwinn homegrown usa. Still has its original grease guard headset and v brakes plus 1996 flite ti railed saddle bike bought new for less than half price in 1999. Now singlespeed and used at least fortnightly for a proper ride. Light, lively and razor sharp on fast flowy singletrack. Lovely bike although the brakes suck big time!!!!!

My First ever Mountain Bike after always having BMX’s

Used to ride it all the time till i was about 16, then started messing with cars, passed Driving Test at 17, then it stayed in Nans Kitchen till last year when we had to give the house up when Nan went into a Care Home.

Its all mostly original apart from the seat which I split when I was younger and, since this photo, Ive replaced the wheels with simular items as the originals had split.

Use it only when Dry because, its only a Raleigh, but it means a lot to me.

Here’s my ’89 Custom Alves. IRD Ti forks, IRD Swtichback brakes, WTB greaseguard hubs. Suntour thumbies, mechs with antlers on them. Jacquie Phelan was the last person to ride it.

I’m currently trying to “restore” this baby, a 1991 Cannondale M400.
Its been stripped and has a few non-original parts, but I got it for nowt! I might use it as a workout bike as its very light, but its more than likely going to be sold on eventually.

At what age does a bike become considered retro?

    charliedontsurf

One of the older bikes in the shed. A clunker racer for 9 of the 11 clunker classics. Suspected to be largely a 1930s pashley. Cranks snapped at first clunker. The rod brakes broke after a few clunkers (damned fast brakes those rods) so now has sturmey drums, on halo DH rims. The bars are renthal motorcycle bars. Stem cap is a champaign cork. Rear light bracket has been oxy acetylene’d into a handy beer bottle opener, might open other bottles, but never tried.

Handling is…. Eeeer, it goes real well in a straight line. Slicks help keep the speed up and corners boot out drifty.

And the cowbell lets folk know I coming on hard and fast, jamming crazy like ghengis khan with an ale’y anus

So take your 1990s modern as MC Hammer bikes, and…. Dance around your flexstem in your big silly pants.

Anyone remember when Marin launched a range of bikes with ‘mud resistant paint’? Always made me laugh that one!

Woody – cheers, will have to get me one of those. Let me know if you split the bike and would be interested in selling it?!

I still have my, owned from new, Fisher Celerity that has lived through various set up’s since 1990. Now in singlespeed form. Although it is currently waiting a headset rebuild as the bearings have finally given up.

In my garage loft is the majority of my first mtb, an ’85 Raleigh Maverick complete with 5 friction shift gears and sidepull brakes. Those brakes and steel rims made for some ‘interesting braking moments’ back then!

    Apologies for lack of pictures.

djaustin – i seen your boy at the Are You Tough Enough event and commented on how cool his Marin was – he was going well!

I’ve got a 1993 Dyna Tech Torus – the welded variety

Great frame, but pretty tired now, with a worn out drop out, meaning i have to wrap bits of coke can around the axle to keep the wheel in place!

Its got XT from the period with grip shifts and the original red DX V-brakes (96 i think)

I’ve fitted Pace rigid forks and a recent disc, headset and bars

I ride it a few times a year – mostly road work though

You made his afternoon. Needs lighter tyres (and better wheels) for racing (but the 2.4’s are “cool” – his words), but I still marvel at how light it is when I put it on the roof.

Still has original full XT groupset, and I’ve only upgraded the front brake to a disk.

I notice that there aren’t many FS bikes in the above list. Any reason? I assume that advances in FS have been significant, but a HT is a HT? Or did they all break ? 😐

Marin Muirwoods 1997. 17″ Tange Triple butted cromoly Frame. Should be double butted Tange for the year so not sure if it is triple butted or the wromg sticker is on it! The frame serial number is for an Eldridge Grade of same year that was tipple butted, so mibbe it’s that frame with Muirwoods colours. Frame Weighs 5.3 ibs. Manitou Spyder 99 fork. Shiman m590 Hollowtch 2 triple chainset, Mavic 317 wheels on xt hubs, alivio rear mech, Deore DX front mech. Hg50 7 speed Cassette. Original Marin alloy seatpost and FSA Orbit XL2 Headset. Stem and Bars are alloy Halfords and nowt to right home about but light enough and no problems so far. Seat, tyres, pedals,V Brakes and 7 speed Gripshift MRX Shifters are from Rockrider 5.0 that I broke when started Marin build and all work ok. Total weight is just under 28ibs. Great all round bike unless trails get really rough. Would like a better fork cos no damping on Spyder but apart from that it’s all good and works fine. If i use original cromoly forks it weighs just 26 ibs

Dave Lloyd CATS WISKAS I built up a few years ago. It was more fun finding the parts and building the bike than it was riding and breaking them. Sold to fund a more sturdy machine… which I also broke 🙄
