I’ve got one, in large, love it. In Ireland, though, not the UK

It’s on my shortlist. I do fancy the idea of a slack ‘ardcore 29er but I have a few reservations though, so would really like to see one in the flesh before taking the plunge.

The minor things that are putting me off at the moment are:
1. The weird +6mm rear wheel offset and what that does to the chainline. I think it restricts crankset options significantly. Looks like an option might be to use a SRAM spiderless GXP crank but with a PF30 ring on it to push the chainline out 6mm at the front.
2. The potential durability/robustness of the adjustable dropout/tensioner things.

I’m down to a shortlist of the Last or a P7 I think.

Watching with interest, they’ve caught my eye and could be a replacement for the BFe as the do it all. I feel I’d run it 29 though, not quite sold on 27.5+.

Re 1- I’m using a standard RaceFace Aeffect chainset with a standard (non Boost) ring – clearance is fine for a 30t. Last were pretty conservative with their chainline/clearance reccomendations. SRAM (and other third parties) make boost-specific direct mount rings for their cranskets, so no need to use a PF30 one, think that would push it too far out. There’s an XT Boost crank too. Plenty of options. Redishing the rear wheel is a minor thing. I think the slightly narrower-than-boost chainline of the Aeffect suits 1×11 setups better as you have a straignter chainline in the bigger cogs.

Re 2 – I’d have preferred a 12×142 or 148 setuo, but the dropouts have been fine, Last updated them since the initial launch and sent me the new ones free, they seem solid. THought they’d be a pain for punctures, but removing and refitting the wheel is no hassle (and the plus size Nobby Nics gave me lots of opportunities to practice).

Have I misunderstood the chainline calcs then?
I thought that as the FF is +6mm towards driveside at the rear, so a boost front (an extra 3mm outboard) would theoretically still be 3mm too far inboard, whereas a PF30 ring (which is 0mm offset, where a “normal” chainset is -6mm) sound like it should be correct.

Will look at boost chainset options now. That might swing it in favour of the FF, as I had thought I’d be pretty much restricted to XX1 or X01.

Not worried about the re-dishing at all. The more even spoke tension L/R is probably a very good thing. Will also give better mud clearance between chain and rear tyre, something that I’ve suffered from on other bikes in the depths of Winter. I’d be running 29er.

Boost chainline is what they recommend. It’s too early in the morning for me to think about it, but pretty sure the offset only moves the wheel 3mm to the drive side – either way, 3mm is all you need at the crank – as Stu rightly says, in front of the tabs instead of behind should work on a normal triple.

Did consider that briefly but need a 30t or less, which if on a 104BCD XT, would end up much more than 6mm outboard.

Got a large, based around Edinburgh, love it! Handles really well, it fits me nicely at 5’11” and a 35 stem.
Pikes and x01. It’s a burly frame with a stiff rear end – don’t expect it to be forgiving in that sense.

Anything I’d change? I’d have put a standard head tube on, integrated top set is a pain in terms of limiting you to very specific headsets (although hope do now make one to fit – they didn’t when I got it despite a different standard having the same name)
I’d probably also have gone with a bolt through rear, but the system they’ve used works well.You’ll need to re-dish any stock wheels because it’s a 6mm offset, but that makes the chainline work better and the rear wheel build stronger.

Aye – that was a pain – it’s the “Campy” style Hope upper that you need, as opposed to the regular IS41 I had the wrong one (IS 41 Type 3) at first, it left a little gap which was annoying, I had an o-ring to seal it for a bit until I exchnaged it for the right model (IS 41 Type 7)

Ref : the offset dropouts thing.

Specialized and merrida have been doing it for about 15 years (at least). And mostly no one notices unless you try and put the wheels off a specialized in another bike, or buy new ones for a specialized and wonder why its not central.

If youve got an old tripple chainset, just stick the single ring in the outer posittion. Et voila, almost limitless chainset options.

Large one here in the Dark Peak. Only one ride in but liking it a lot so far. More comfortable rear end than the Transition TA29 I was running before and the extra reach and slackness is good. I’m 6ft and it feels good to me with a 50mm stem on, reach once sagged is pretty similar to my FS.
