I am not a squash player but he, and Jansher, were fascinating to watch due to their fantastic court skills as well as fitness, a bit like watching McEnroe verses his peers.

The Klitschko brothers.
They have been so dominant over the heavyweight division since Lennox Lewis retired.
I cant think of any of boxer or any other sportsperson who has dominated for so long.

Athletics i would say Ed Moses basically you just could not beat him and everyone knew it and yet he was/is still very humble – heard him interviewed recently and he said the records did not matter to him just doing his best was all he aimed to do.
Cycling most would have Armstrong a proper cyclists would say Merckx IMHO

Surely Daley Thompson deserves a mention – Thompson’s rivalry with West German athlete Jürgen Hingsen was legendary in the sport throughout the 1980s. The pair consistently traded world records, but Thompson always had the upper hand in the major events, remaining undefeated in all competitions for nine years between 1979 and 1987.
the klitschko brothers have dominated a poor era for heavweights so cannot be taken seriously – imagine them against some of the greatest – do you really think they stand a chance against ali, Foreman or Frazier in their prime?

there was a quote from either graham or martin bell in a ski magazine about eddie – when asked about eddie he just said “balls of steel”.

He was a near olympic standard downhill racer who changed to ski jumping at a very late stage – way after all those other guys had learnt when they were kids without comprehension of fear. To progress up to full sized jumps at the speed he did was very unusual.

He also had to jump with his thick glasses on, which would steam up and gave him very limited visibility during the jumps.

Plus he had a lack of training facilities compared to the other competitors – anyone see that bodged up wooden frame thing he would use in his garden to practise the transition to the jump position?

he deserves a lot of respect.

…. Heavyweight boxing is only said to be in a poor condition purely because they are dominating so clearly over all other contenders.
The Ali – Frazier – Foreman era was said to be the best simply because they were on an almost level par.
If Ali could have dominated then the opposition would have been classed as poor …but because he struggled and this made for exciting fights ..
The Klitschko brothers have been too good for their own good. They have made their opposition look bad.

And as for questioning a Klitschko agains Ali, Frazier or Foreman??
All these guys were no bigger than 15stone at their best … by modern standards of heavyweight, that is very small.
Ali was knocked down by a thirtenn stone guy in Henry Cooper .. Ali struggled against big guys like Norton .. A 6foot 7inch guy with a sledgehammer punch weighing 18stone would have bowled over the peak Ali, Frazier and Foremans very easilly.

You cant compare past sportsmen to todays….especially in boxing.

The trouble is so many sports have so many sub-disciplines it is difficult to dominate an entire sport. Redgrave for example, won Olympic golds in particular versions of rowing. Did he also dominate rowing world champs?

Lewis beat him ok it was a TKO but he said

Not even the best of the recent era at heavyweight nor even boxing never mind all time.
Manny Pacquiao is far superior and Joe Calzaghe is massively underrated IMHO.

Calzaghe and Lewis are two of the most overrated boxers ever, both fought in an era of washed up fighters and and has beens. Plus, they were awful to watch. Tyson dominated from around 84 to his first loss of the title, and was magnificent to watch. Dominating a sport and being a great athlete can be too mutually exclusive things.

Bjoern Dunkerbeck. One the overall windsurfing world title 12 years running and has accumulated somewhere between 35 and 40 discipline world titles in windsurfing. One of the few people to win Racing and wave titles in the same year and if I remember correctly he even won the freestyle world title the first year of the discipline!

The greatest female marathon runner in history. Has won a countless number of races. Holds the WR which is almost 3 minutes faster than the next best time. Has won several races in a faster time than any other woman has ever run.

And is so fast she can stop for a ‘comfort break’ and still win the race.

Now that is taking the pee….

Unfortunately elf, her record is let down by her performances on the biggest stage.

No it’s not. She’s still a more accomplished and successful athlete than the Olympic champions. They know it too. How can you say her record is ‘let down’? That’s just nonsense. She doesn’t need to win the Lympics to prove her greatness, that’s how great she actually is.

Even without pacesetters she still managed 2hr17’42”. That fact that she completely eclipses loads of other great athletes just cements her position as one of sport’s true greats.

The greatest road racer of all time…

Joey Dunlop. Totally dominated the IOM TT from 1977 – 2000, 26 TT wins inc a win in 2000 aged 48. I had the honour of meeting him at a small local race and was the most humble and modest superstar. A true legend

Julia Mann dominated women’s badminton in the UK, well beyond the span of most players.

She’s still a more accomplished and successful athlete than the Olympic champions.

So why hasn’t she won one then? This thread is about people who’ve dominated their sport, and clearly a failure to win an Olympic medal (along with only one victory in a global championship) suggests she hasn’t done that.

If you’re after a distance runner who’s dominated, Haile Gebrselassie is a far better candidate.

Well I’ve enjoyed reading this thread and finding out about sportsmen & women that I’d never heard of. I love stories of great sporting deeds and legacies. I’m still to be convinced that anyone dominated more than Bradman though, statistically he’s head and shoulders above everyone else.

So why hasn’t she won one then?

Sigh…

Radcliffe did not compete in the London Marathon in 2004, but was the favourite to win a gold medal in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Athens. However, she suffered an injury to her leg just two weeks prior to the event and had to use a high dose of anti-inflammatory drugs. This had an adverse effect on her stomach hindering food absorption. She ended up withdrawing from the race after 36 km. Five days later she started in the 10,000 metres but, still suffering from the effects of the marathon, retired with eight laps remaining.

Radcliffe withdrew from the 2008 London Marathon due to a foot injury.[25] Shortly after the London Marathon, it was also revealed that Radcliffe was suffering from an injury to her hip, preventing her from running. Originally thought to be a muscular problem, scans later revealed it was a stress fracture to her femur. In May, Radcliffe broke her left leg.
Radcliffe managed to get to fitness level for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but cramped during the marathon to the point where she had to stop running and stretch. She resumed the race and finished in 23rd place overall.

So, injury set her back both times. Had she not have suffered such bad luck, then I don’t think you’d be sitting there typing silliness on tinternet. You’d be quiet as you’d have no argument. As it is, you’re now educated a bit more so you don’t need to say silly things any more. 🙂

Haile Gabrisellassie I is her male equivalent for sure. Fantastic runner and a proper joy to watch in’t marathon; he always acknowledges the crowds and is also deservedly a true great.
