I’m going to make a giant sausage roll for tonight’s dinner.  Obviously the plan was for chips and beans.  However, the cheese sauce thread has made me consider new potatoes and cheesy sauce.

Then I thought wedges.  And now I am confused and doubting myself.

So what should we have?  All advice appreciated.

I’m making it with chilli sausages BTW.

Chips, plus some tomato sauce to give you all three food groups.

Aren’t sausage rolls a snack between meals!? 🙂

And sausage rolls should be eaten by hand – the thought of eating a sausage roll with a knife and fork makes me ick!

For dinner – chips and beans, for tea – mashed potatoes, carrots, peas and gravy, maybe some mustard or mint sauce.

My standard Greggs order is a cheese and onion pasty with a sausage roll chaser

It’s a dream combination. You can’t beat double pastry!

How about a cheese and onion pie?

Why can you not have cheese sauce with your chips and beans? Sounds magnificent to me. Heinz beans with half a tea spoon of garlic granules and half a tea spoon of smoky paprika, if that helps at all

Bacon too. Don’t forget the bacon.

Another sausage roll, both sandwiched between some heavily buttered thick white bread.

There’s a verse in Corinthians I think covers this, ah yes

“Meat pie, sausage roll, come on England give us a goal”

    Amen

Yorkshire pudding. So a sausage roll toad in the hole.

    Lots of gravy.

This might upset a few, but Why would you put gravy on a sausage roll??

Steak pie – yes to gravy….

Anyway, back to the original question:

Just chips, beans and some thickly buttered crusty bread……

Chips and beans – Heinz obviously. Forget the gravy, the sauce on the beans is enough.

You can cook the whole thing in the micro at the same time.

    .

On the subject of pastry, I’ve a 3/4lb steak pie from the local butchers for dinner tonight.

    a giant sausage roll

So do you mean some sort of Sausage-Meat Wellington?  I quite like the idea.

Why not. You’d put gravy over a meat pie, with a pastry crust. You’d put gravy over sausages. It wouldn’t be my first choice but that’s not saying it’s wrong.

Gravy tastes good, that’s why you lick it off your fingers. Same as the grease that leaks from a good sausage roll. Put those together, you’ll lick your fingers twice.

I am on record as agreeing with you on most things filthy. I believe i even inspired you to chuck a tattie waff on a fishfinger roll and slather on the saladcream.

Buts Greggs sausage rolls are **** horrible. How do they get the slightly vinegary taste in them?

I used to enjoy the occasional Greggs corned beef pasty and sausage roll for lunch but I I really don’t like the greasy pastry that Greggs cover their bakes with these days..

    Baked beans is a must.

Then probably some carrots and broccoli for the conscience.

Nobody has written  this precisely enough, so I’m going to write it properly:

    Chips and beans

As a curve ball, what about a scotch egg?

Sliced in two it would look like 2 fried eggs, sausage roll, chips and beans

Big mug of tea, and a mop up slice.

There is no word in the English language to describe such perfection

A side order of poutine is in order. What’s not to like about cheesy chips with gravy?

Wow, everything everyone says about STW is true

HP original FTW plus chips and gravy, no need to have vegetables

    Avocado and a greek salad

Obviously not. To be honest, I think I’d just eat them with a variety of (separate!) sauces – mayo, sriracha mayo, some chilli sauce, maybe some ketchup

Chips and beans if I had to

I used to make a jumbo sausage roll with a slight twist, instead of just pork mince I would make the filling 50/50 with sage & onion stuffing plus a few additions of smoked paprika & toasted pine nuts.

I usually served it with buttered sprouts & roast parsnips. Gravy was either boggo granules or a proper stock with added redcurrant jelly & grainy mustard.

I’m now feeling quite hungry typing that out!

Just as well I have a beef casserole cooking that should be ready in an hour 🙂

Chilli sauce – not enough to overpower it, just enough for a bit of ‘zing’…

And technically chilli peppers are fruit, so that’s one of your 5 a day covered!!!

Very buttery baby potatoes, sausage roll, grilled tomatoes or broccoli. Either a cheese sauce or gravy…

    Dip it in batter.

    Fry.

I need to try that for real.

I got told off by a dinner lady for complaining that sausage roll, chips and beans was only available 3 times per week.
