15 miles each way, pretty hilly with 1200 ft of climbing each way. The road in the morning, which is quiet roads for the main, so far from unpleasant. This is the extended 20 mile off-road return journey….

So jealous of all you guys above with nice commutes. Mine is 11 miles each way from Ashton to Salford Quays through the centre of Manchester battling with the rush hour traffic, but I still love it. Like someone said above, it wakes you up in the morning and de-stresses you on the way home. My route is also slightly downhill on the way in to work and uphill on the way back (who’d have thought it), which is nice. At the moment it is taking me about 50mins on the way in and an hour on the way back (stop-start due to traffic lights/busses/people stepping out in front of me/cars blocking the cycle lanes etc etc) on a singlespeed road bike.

I’d urge everyone to spend a good bit of time thoroughly investigating possible routes using the Sustrans online mapping, CycleStreets journey planner and a even bit of scouting about in spare time.

IMO it is well worth taking a route that is 5-10 minutes longer if it means you are out of busy traffic and can have a nice enjoyable relaxing cycle instead of a stressful bum-clencher.

You may not have anything of course. Cycling provision is famously crap in this country (I lived near Manchester for a while and it was hard to get anywhere useful without going on a motorway, so you’re probably stuffed stormtrooper).

All the more reason to become a Sustrans supporter, as they are one of the few charities that actually seem to be making some progress on the ground.

20 miles each way between 3 and 5 days a week on the bike. Traffic free for 12 miles then urban traffic after that. Wouldn’t want to do much further, or much shorter for that matter.

snap graham – i drop onto the deeside way for 10k about 2k from my door and then cut through parks etc on the edge of the city- keeping off the roads was a primary concern when we bought our gaff.

+1 to what Graham is saying. Spend some time looking at a map, or just nipping up side streets & paths – you’ll be surprised at what you might find. I’ve found nice quiet routes into the cycling wastelands of Bradford & Drighlington, so it’s possible! 🙂

If you’ve got time, its always nice to get one of those traditional paper OS things, and have a game of ‘I wonder where that goes’ on the way home.

I’ve found a good few fun alternative off-road routes home that way

* Disclaimer: I’ve also ended up axle deep in a few bogs, and shouldering my bike over multiple dry stone walls and stiles. Hey ho! 😀

6 miles each way…… so a 12 mile round trip . Very busy A road all the way, not to bad if it’s fine, grim if it’s raining. It’s amazing how much grit and s¥$t gets thrown up by vehicles as the pass you in the wet.

7 miles each way here every day, if I’m running late I can cut down to 6 but I rarely do (lots more traffic). I sometimes add in an extra mile or two off road on my way home when I’m on my CX and the pannier(s) aren’t fully loaded with shopping etc

do be careful though – there are a couple of bits on my route i actively avoid after the waking of the chavs times at school holidays – you get chased , stones chucked at you etc etc …. only if im climbing mind you – i quite like a game of skittles at 60kph !

I did say in the “wet”, not “monsoon season” 🙂

Cheers for the links, unfortunately told me what I already knew, muddy 90% xc route or 2miles longer cleanish route with a 3 mile schlep on a horrible A road at the end, mixing it up with cars lorries and trams 🙁

Good places to start looking for new commuters tho

3.5 miles each way on roads / tow path, passing a large Tesco en-route which makes shopping for food very convenient.

14 miles each way if I cycle and use the train for the Bradford to ‘fax bit. 22 miles each way if I go all the way, which I only do if I have no time constraints and it’s nice out.

I didn’t realise it was an Independent nation state. Have they been to the UN? 😉

Yeah the search engine is a bit pants. 🙂

But it does definitely have maps for Aberdeen.
It even has its own mini-site: http://aberdeen.cyclestreets.net/
(no Doric translation though)

Have people tried the free Cycle Hub App.

Its quite handy too for route planning, especially on the fly. Can give you the most direct or the more pleasant scenic routes. I can’t vouch for it recognising Aberdeen, but Manchesters definitely there 😉

Yep. Basically the same as Cycle Streets (uses their maps and routing engine) but the sat-nav bit of it is better (does turn-by-turn directions with voice).

You can even plan routes on CycleStreets then just plug the route number into the Bike Hub app.

aye poke that route – even the quietest route is LETHAL.

it suggests my journey is 8.2 miles – i do 15 to avoid crazy roads.

16.2 miles to work, up to 25 miles back home depending on time & energy levels. 2,400ft of climbing on the shortest return route (work & back), extended routes all add more climbing.
Aim to be doing that 2 to 3 times a week, managed 81 times so far this year, hoping to get a hundred in by Xmas.
All on road on my (t)rusty Kaffenback.

Fair enough – that is probably more leeway than CycleStreets allows for.

If you anyone has any good routes that don’t appear in CycleStreets the please please please get involved and update the map.

It is all based on OpenStreetMap/OpenCycleMap, it’s relatively easy to do and updating it means all cyclists in your area can benefit from better mapping and routes.

25 miles each way by car (motorway for 90%).

I get the occasional urge to cycle, but then i wise up 😀 It would add 4-6 miles to the journey and maybe 3-4 hours to my working day. Which would mean getting up at 5 in the morn and getting home after 9. I wouldn’t see the kids at all.

5.5 in and 6.5 back along the second half of GrahamS route. git of a climb up into the town and back to the house each way though. But hell it makes you stronger. Just a couple of times a week at the mo as I’m working back up after a few years of not riding.

We are rather blessed with ex railway turned dirt track up here, makes rides out with my wife easier as she loves the bike but not bouncing down rocky singletrack.

20 miles either way on the A49 🙁

Graham S – you’d like to think i’d walk it if it was only 2.5 miles

I’ve walked it as couple of times, but its a bit dodgy with no pavements and busy roads

Therefore, you’d think i rode instead. Sadly, you’d be wrong…

12 miles there and back…every day. takes about 20-25 minutes to get into work and 30-40 to get home because its uphill….good training though
takes longer in the car for some reason…and i hate waiting for buses!!
the days are starting to get darker….should be interesting……

On Monday I drive 215 miles from Ilkley to Surrey, drive back Tuesday night.

For the rest of the week either ride 18 miles each way to Leeds or get the train
