Has anyone here done the Tuscany Trail event?

I’m hoping to do it next year with a couple of mates over three days on my XC MTB (other two are on gravel bikes) – we plan to find accommodation as don’t fancy tents and bike packing.

I’d love to hear about it from people who have done it.

I think there’s a GCN video about it. We were in Tuscany at the time this year and saw a lot of the riders. Looked brilliant 🙂

Did it last year absolutely brilliant. Great scenery, lots of hills and fantastic food. They had a couple of camping areas but they were cramped and noisy so we just found a quiet place in the forests. Using pre-booked accommodation would work well and less kit to carry. The route changes every year but seems to visit most of the same towns. Try to make time to have a wonder around them and get a gelato.

Did the 1st one about 10 years ago and have done several others over the last few years, as it’s got bigger and bigger around 5000 riders, myself and some friends have done it the week before the main event. Means you get the amazing route to yourself and you are not fighting for food as the pack of locusts descend on the small village shops

Highly recommend it and the routes are usually well thought out, but when you throw big numbers into the equation I do wonder if you get the same experience, especially trying to find accommodation en-route

Always support the event and usually finish just as the main event kicks off, so if you feel the need to see loads of people on bikes the option is there 🙂

Me and my good friend Dave rode the 2023 loop clockwise at the start of October. It was really good. We started just south of Siena which made day 1 the longest day in terms of distance and height gained. We rode it over five days at a relaxed pace. Booked all our accommodation two days before we started it so found some lovely spots to stay en route. I was on my gravel bike with mtb tyres and it was perfect for the trails. The hill top towns and scenery are gorgeous. And the food is <chef’s kiss>. We had one day of rain and the rest was lovely. Warm and sunny. The road sections we found to be quiet. I would definitely do it again and enjoyed the lightweight approach of not camping. There is something lovely about a warm shower and going out for dinner every night!

I would say three days would be doable but you would probably be missing out on the opportunity to do a bit of chilled stopping and would make it more of a mission. It would make for long days too. I would say don’t underestimate how hilly it can be and the gravel roads are not as fast as tarmac…..although they are a lot of fun. I have no idea how fast you are on a bike but three days would have felt really rushed for us and when you are in Italy, it seems a shame to go for long days in the saddle at the expense of taking in your surroundings and savouring the experience. It is the kind of adventure where the first to the finish is not the winner.

    Cheers
