Just watched Up for the first time. First 10 mins and last 10 mins are exceptionally moving, but the rest of the film is only okay (the dogs are especially cool) IMO. It's making me question some of my values and priorities which has to be a good thing. So all in all, a v good film but not the best ... don't know what is TBF.

Do you mean "film I have enjoyed the most" or "the film I think is technically the best"?

Either way, I couldn't narrow it down to just one, but some suggestions may be:

Alien
Shawshank Redemption
Seven
Apocalypse Now
Platoon
Gladiator

Obvious but I really like Godfather Part II.

Please no-one say No Country For Old Men. 😐

You know what I'm going to go with one of my favourites and possibly still my favourite although I'm not sure it still is but anyway.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Such great characters, beautifully shot, fantastic sets and a great plot.

Hard one...in recent memory, "best" was There Will Be Blood
All time favourites are The Princess Bride (even though, technically, it lacks a lot. It's more a sentimental favourite) and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.

It's a close one between Shawshank and tonight's viewing which was Django Unchained. Gladiator in third.

Blade Runner is close, but I think the best 'film' (inverted commas most definitely needed here*) I have ever seen is Moulin Rouge.

*by which I mean the most truly film-like film.

Recently: Tyrannosaur,
Not so recently: There will be blood,

I didn't 'enjoy' either but found both to be moving and well acted. If we're going for enjoyment then its 'The Lion King' & all Disney since has been crap.

Shawshank Redemption by a country mile - effortless from start to end and utterly captivating. Always amazes me that it was written by the same man that brought us The Shining, Carrie, Christine, It...

The original Matrix was superb. I grew up with the original Star Wars movies, so I guess these have had the most lasting memories for me

Royal tenenbaums. Its funny, its sad, it makes you think, its beautifully shot, great costumes, great sets, great characters and great soundtrack. One of the first films that made me consider "film" as art as much as entertainment.

i love that film.

One of the worst I've ever seen terrible film.

Is that just because you didn't enjoy it personally, or because it is actually a badly made film?

Well, The Godfather part 2 is better than The Godfather for a start.

Probably One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

But there are other great films which sometimes are better.

Is geoffj really saying a semi-amusing pirate film is the best film ever? Blimey, you need to watch some more films matey!

I imagine that my favourite will change over time as great new films emerge and great older films become a little tired and dated

but, my current favourite is No Country for Old Men (sorry Grum). partly because I love the book and the author, partly because Anton Chigurh is an amazing character amazingly played by Javier Bardem and partly because it's a modern classic Western.
Like the book, I was utterly captivated by the film and have watched it time and again.
It has it's faults, but I don't care, I love it.

Actually, thinking about it, Casablanca. The French national anthem bit gets me every time.

As has been said, one film just doesn't do it. Others:

Godfather Pt 2
Little Big Man
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Goodfellas
Aliens
Westworld
Close Encounters...

Casablanca

I agree with Merak. Out of the thousands I've seen, Jaws is the only perfect film. And the obviously rubber shark is a part of that.

Christ, so many great films, to just pick one? Possibly not the greatest ever made, and I'm not sure it's for me to make that call, because there are so many, but I guess North By North-west, just because its an almost perfect blend of action, storytelling, cinematography and directing. It's a film I've never become bored with, and I can happily sit through it any time it comes on TV.

Best film I've ever seen? Moulin Rouge
Best film cos I watch it over and over again and love every single second of it? Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
What I think should probably be my best film? it's a close call between The Fountain, Pan's Labyrinth, A Midnight Clear, Snow Falling On Cedars, and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Lord of War is a brilliant film, pretty grim background to the whole thing (arms dealers) but very very good. Even if it does have Nicholas Cage in it.
The Angel's share is good too.

I'd struggle to think of anything that could surpass The Fountain personally.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/

Almost like it was made for me personally.

Satantango is the best film ever - undeniably!

Undeniably great, especially if you mean great in terms of duration. Eschewing fantastic b/w foreign jobbies, and ignoring the inherent nonsense of a best film ever, Life of Brian.

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

"I say you are Lord, and I should know. I've followed a few."

"He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!"

"How shall we **** off, O Lord?"

"You're only 'sposed to blow the bloody doors off."

etc

I love The Deer Hunter

The bleakness of small town, industrial america, combined with the horrors of the Vietnam war, it's no wonder so many vets suffer(ed) from severe mental health problems.

As it's already been mentioned, I cant nominate Jaws, but probably 2nd has to be
LA Confidential.

As for some of the other choices - Heat? Havent you seen the original - LA Takedown?
Better IMO, but without the stars.
Also dont confuse Nikita with the awful TV series 'La femme Nikita'

Reckon your favourite film is the one amongst many DVDs that you will happily watch over and over. With that in mind I can't say I am excited by the thought of watching the godfather films or other classics. I feel the Departed is a cracking film that iv watched many times and never loses its appeal. Great story, great cast and humour. It's got my vote.

Reckon your favourite film is the one amongst many DVDs that you will happily watch over and over.

It's a yardstick I use. If I watch a film and then the next day someone visits and goes "hey, let's watch this!" and I think "yay!" then that's a favourite film.

Fitting that bill for me would be Alien, Aliens, Escape From New York, The Princess Bride, and (to my shame) Highlander. Probably others.

Incidentally, as I said earlier, I watched No Country for Old Men. Brilliant film, right up until they rolled the credits halfway through the movie. What's up with that, did they run out of time and just go "and they're all dead, the end"?
