Casablanca

Good shout. Watched it not so long ago, expecting it to be a load of schmaltzy shite. It was very good.

Ah, that's the point though. Just one!

If it were websites then no question it would be YouTube.

When it comes to movies, picking one, very tricky. 🙂

I agree with Merak. Out of the thousands I've seen, Jaws is the only perfect film. And the obviously rubber shark is a part of that.

Christ, so many great films, to just pick one? Possibly not the greatest ever made, and I'm not sure it's for me to make that call, because there are so many, but I guess North By North-west, just because its an almost perfect blend of action, storytelling, cinematography and directing. It's a film I've never become bored with, and I can happily sit through it any time it comes on TV.

Best film I've ever seen? Moulin Rouge
Best film cos I watch it over and over again and love every single second of it? Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
What I think should probably be my best film? it's a close call between The Fountain, Pan's Labyrinth, A Midnight Clear, Snow Falling On Cedars, and Letters From Iwo Jima.

Johny Dangerously, I used to watch it every week when I was a kid. Roman Maroni was the best gangster villain ever

Lord of War is a brilliant film, pretty grim background to the whole thing (arms dealers) but very very good. Even if it does have Nicholas Cage in it.
The Angel's share is good too.

I'd struggle to think of anything that could surpass The Fountain personally.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414993/

Almost like it was made for me personally.

Satantango is the best film ever - undeniably!

I do wonder how many people have actually sat right through it in one go as you are supposed to.

and great older films become a little tired and dated

How can this be true?

Look above North by Northwest, A Matter of Life and Death, It's a Wonderful Life, all of their time but incredible entertainment

Undeniably great, especially if you mean great in terms of duration. Eschewing fantastic b/w foreign jobbies, and ignoring the inherent nonsense of a best film ever, Life of Brian.

"All right, but apart from the sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and public health, what have the Romans ever done for us?"

"I say you are Lord, and I should know. I've followed a few."

"He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!"

"How shall we **** off, O Lord?"

"You're only 'sposed to blow the bloody doors off."

etc

I love The Deer Hunter

The bleakness of small town, industrial america, combined with the horrors of the Vietnam war, it's no wonder so many vets suffer(ed) from severe mental health problems.

As it's already been mentioned, I cant nominate Jaws, but probably 2nd has to be
LA Confidential.

As for some of the other choices - Heat? Havent you seen the original - LA Takedown?
Better IMO, but without the stars.
Also dont confuse Nikita with the awful TV series 'La femme Nikita'

Reckon your favourite film is the one amongst many DVDs that you will happily watch over and over. With that in mind I can't say I am excited by the thought of watching the godfather films or other classics. I feel the Departed is a cracking film that iv watched many times and never loses its appeal. Great story, great cast and humour. It's got my vote.

It's a yardstick I use. If I watch a film and then the next day someone visits and goes "hey, let's watch this!" and I think "yay!" then that's a favourite film.

Fitting that bill for me would be Alien, Aliens, Escape From New York, The Princess Bride, and (to my shame) Highlander. Probably others.

Incidentally, as I said earlier, I watched No Country for Old Men. Brilliant film, right up until they rolled the credits halfway through the movie. What's up with that, did they run out of time and just go "and they're all dead, the end"?

I disagree with that: IMO the best films are the ones that stay with you long after they have finished. You don't need to watch them that often for them to affect you.

I'm like that with music: Some of my favourite albums are ones that I don't listen to that often, and yet I can still remember virtually the whole of each album enough to have the tunes and lyrics going through my head.

e.g. Iron Man: A film I can watch over and over, and yet I think Goodfellas or Apocalypse Now or The Day the Earth Caught Fire or Pulp Fiction or etc etc are films that move me more, and I don't feel the need to watch those over and over.

I'm not sure I'd equate "favourite" with "best". There are plenty of what would be pretty ordinary films that are amongst my favourites. Put up against "great" films, they'd come up fairly short.

2001 love the odd slowness and formality of it combined with the wtf ending.
