Tea bags and tannin – mug v teapot heated debate

I’m having a discussion with my mate over whether more tannin (bitter taste) can be tasted if tea is made with a tea bag in a mug or in a pot.

I say it is more bitter in a mug (and oilier). He says it makes no difference whatsoever.

What do you think?

If you squeeze the teabag against the side of the mug when brewing up, which many people do, that releases more tannin.

Yes you can! PG Tips is lovely stuff! And I’ve discovered Yorkshire Tea Hard Water Version, which is very nice, too.

Granted, you can’t beat a nice pot of Lapsang Suchong, or Darjeeling, mind. But it’s a lot more spensive, and a lot more faff. For a quick cuppa, you can’t beat a bag.

So anyway…… do you reckon mug only for teabag, and teacup and saucer for when it’s made in a teapot ?

teapot for me,fresh water boiled once, yorkshire teabags in the pot, splash of milk in the mug. I guess you must be on nighshift Pandora? People dont realise the importance of tea to the nightshift worker!

When at my mum’s or aunty’s then it is the teapot with bone china tea set but at home/work then it is a teapot and mug (first out the pot).

It is my mate who likes the mug and teabag *shudder*

one of the most significant aspects is whether you *clean* your teapot!
A friend used to work in the Foreign Office and had a post in India (?), and one day had a trip around the Twinnings Tea plantation and met Mr. Twinning himself. She never suffered fools easily, said he was a ‘ proper ****t, but made a good cup of tea…..’ ( her exact words! )
She later said he had told her the most important thing he said was to keep the teapot clean and washed i.e. do NOT let it get all brown and scaled inside, as the tannins do ruin the flavour.
So I suppose, as a cup is regularly washed, therefore removing the tannin build up, you could argue it was a better place to make your tea!!!!
