One of my friends is building up a flat bar gravel bike which is going to have 1×12 Shimano XT drivetrain.

So with it being a T47 BB then is it possible to use an XT chainset, or will it have to be a road 1x chainset?

    Thanks

Depends if the frame has a 68 or 73mm bottom bracket shell.

T47 BBs comes in both AFAIK.

The Wheels MFG ones say compatible with 68-100mm BB shells, and come with various tube spacers to suit as well as spacers to sit between crank arms and bearings, so seem to be compatible with road/gravel and MTB stuff.

The Hope T47 chart/fitting instructions are good for this. In short, whatever size it is there will be an easy solution, but as mentioned it will involve spacers to get centred most likely

The answer is basically yes – you could fit an XT chainset to any T47 bb, but there are at least 4 standard sizes as it comes in internal and external variants. The internal variant gives you the same overall width as a traditional BB with external cups. The sizes are 68 and 86.5 for road, 73 / 92 for MTB. You can fit a mtb chainset in a road shell, using extra 24mm spacers, but not the other way round. Most ‘gravel’ frames will use a road BB but not all, so you need to check the width. If it is a road size, it may be easier getting a GRX chainset and using that with the XT derailleur. You can swap the GRX chainring to 38, possibly 36. You can also get flat bar shifters to work with GRX derailleurs in 11sp, not sure about 12, but XT will give you better range using 11.

    Lots of options.
