Phoenix is going skiing with his school for a week from Xmas to after new year. They’ve been a bit behind (their words) in telling us about what’s needed as the meeting for it was only on Thursday. Don’t think they realise apart from the severe short notice that Xmas etc is happening too making all this even more stressful.

They have informed us that because the coach is full there will be limited room for bags so the coach company won’t allow hard cases. The company that was there talking to us about what’s needed suggested that a two wheeled holdall with telescopic handle is ideal, but the ones they were selling had sold out. They said around 80-100litres should be fine, their ones were around 80cmx35cmx38cm.

So at this very short notice and needing one before Xmas and preferably not too expensive because of everything else going on too, does anyone have any recommendations for something like that I could go through with him and see what he likes so I can get one?

Thankyou in advance for helping and hopefully destressing an extremely stressed dad

I got an Eagle Creek Migrate wheeled duffle (110L) – https://www.tradeinn.com/trekkinn/en/eagle-creek-migrate-110l-wheeled-duffel/140494862/p. Squishy enough to pack down a bit and be crammed in, but seems pretty hardwearing. Mine’s bright orange, which also makes it easy to spot on a baggage carousel!

    IS the answer.

Pro-tip for airports..because its a ‘soft bag’ you tend to have to go to a special bag check area in the airport (or at least you have to at Manchester) and the queue is usually empty as everyone has hard cases… so you can detach the 20L pack as a carry on, and check in the bigger one.

I have a Vango 80+20 and it’s superb, but huge! so a 60+20 is probably a more versatile option unless you really need the extra space.

Sports direct and Decathalon are both excellent for wheeeled bags/cases.

Dakine Split Roller 110L for the win! They aren’t cheap but they are more or less bomb proof. And have loads of handy pockets for the little things you have almost forgotten, and can’t be arsed to reopen the main compartment to pack.

+1 for Dakine Split Roller.  Think about 85l rather than 110l as I think a fully loaded 110l might go over the 23kg limit.

Recently picked up an Animal one that is very nice. The split case is very handy. Wife has a very similar looking dakine, also very nice.

If you aren’t too fussy you are welcome to my old one. It’s still perfectly functional but has started to go a bit tatty around the bottom corners by the wheels. It’s been a great bag but I have a new one now. This was going to go to the charity shop but it’s yours if you want it. In Bristol

If its a one off d go to a charity shop and ask the staff to look out for something, usually they have things like this lurking in a back room waiting for summer. Best thing is its say a tenner, use it and give it back, they sell it again.

    take a look at

    https://www.24mx.co.uk/accessories/bags–backpacks_c10033/gear-bags_c10186

loads of different gear bags including personalised ones for less than 100 quid. Based in Sweden so takes a few days to arrive but you wouldn’t know it from the shop, they are the biggest online store for MX/enduro stuff in Europe, they do MTB kit too.

Cheapest Argos one. Don’t expect it to last many trips but works fine and you don’t cry when you need to catch the last train from the airport which involves running down the stairs as the train is about to go resulting in the wheels pinging off.

Facebook marketplace or eBay if you’re on a budget but want something that lasts. There’ll be plenty on there.

I bought a berghaus 85litre wheeled holdall about 15 years ago. I’ve used it every holiday since and it is still in cracking condition. Bought from Tiso. Just searched. Wow, they’re expensive now. It was only about £30!

I have a split roller, the eastpak equivalent and the alpkit roller duffel.

Split roller if budget allows but the alpkit is jolly good for about £100

The Mountain Warehouse wheeled duffle is pretty good for the price, it’s usually discounted and there’s often codes to find to stack up on top too.

Bought an Eastpak cabin split roller years ago and still looks like new so when needed suitcases just went up a couple of sizes. Gets treated like normal luggage rather than a duffel bag and is pretty bombproof. Get a nice colour and its easier to spot too!

    I think E-Bay is your friend here…

That link is a search that results in lots in the UK starting from £20. Many less than £50

Thank you for all your suggestions, really appreciate them all. Will spend the evening perusing now so he can have a look tomorrow and take it from there.

I have asked in the charity shops in town today as mentioned but none of them has anything remotely similar so that scuppers that suggestion albeit a very good one I hadn’t thought if doing.

    @nickjb
really appreciate the offer and if you were closer I’d definitely take you up on it, bit far in Carmarthen though unfortunately.
