I don’t think anyones mentioned how cool it is for looking at pros rides. Check this on, Taylor Phinneys MSR.

Quite depressing how slow/weak in comparison! Just awesome stats.

Girlfriend has become obsessed with it since she discovered how few girls use it so shes busy becoming QOM on all the local climbs.

lol my gf is the same, she’s memorised them all and suddenly shoots off the front of the ride 🙂

I think I may have to re-register as a girl….that way I will only be getting beaten by a slightly less embarrassing margin.

Hardly anyone uses Strava here so I’m pretty much guaranteed KoM on segments. In some respects it’s good but in others it means there’s no idea whether the time is good or not.

    that’s the best way atlaz!

now that the popularity of it is increasing it’s getting a whole lot harder to keep up the top of the hit parade round here.

I’ve noticed that round here the segments are pretty predictable – just the climbs from bottom to top. I’m starting to add some more interesting ones other than another 2 min climb.

Rode a whole bunch in Tenerife a few weeks ago, wow talk about long and steep, like nothing I’ve done before!

700 meters gain, over 10KM, at an average of 7%, fun!

iDave, i’ve noticed people are starting to add more interesting ones, downhills and flat, fast sections are becomin more noticeable

However I quite like knowing where I’m losing time to people (on climbs it’s obvious, on downs not so much). It was always interesting to see where I drop away from people fastest when back in the UK as it helped me realise where I could probably easily get faster without as much risk. Here it’d be nice to have the same benchmark.

I’ve only recently discovered it and can’t wait to get over to some familiar trails and getting the position back up the rankings!

The road climbs are humbling though, i think i’m 800th or something up Box Hill!

Privacy is definitely lacking on this site though. It says your name will be “anonymized” on the rankings, but then it shows your actual real name.

Are you sure that is just because you are viewing it logged in? Try loggin out, or using a different browser and checking. You should then see the privacy settings applied, as that is how others will see you.

As long as you always ride solo no one will ever know 😉

of course, in my case, I’d still be rubbish as a girl rider.

I do like Strava, although I can see it turning every ride into a race.

I’ve only just discovered this, used it 3 times or so just to see my distance, elevation and times but on a ride this morning I got 2 achievements on the same route, wasn’t even aware of this function, nothing special but it’s got me thinking now everytime I do that route I’m going to try harder on those sections!
With hiding your address, you can crop the start and end point when you’ve uploaded – I’ve only been messing around with it this morning but I assume you can upload as a private route, edit, then make public? I did look at adding my address but the miniumum distance is to block everything from 500ft from that address which seems a lot to me, thought it would be better if you can add your own distance?

you can change the distance to 1km etc.

also, pick two or three local postcodes and block all of them so you end up with a ‘fuzzy’; edge to the exlusion zone – makes it more difficult to find a ‘centre’.

I had a guy email me this other week

“My nemesis on Strava!!! .. I have taken your KOM up stoke park and bell hill.. I challenge you”

I actually didn’t realise I had a KOM as this was the day i wanted to find out how far my commute was (using my dawes steel tourer)

Just joined the STW group for this and have been checking out my local “segments”. One of them is a climb towards the end of my local short road loop that has invariably has me gurning and burning by the time I reach the top of it.

I can only conclude that the KOM for that segment was hanging off the back of a milk float when he set that pace. Going up it that fast doesn’t seem humanly possible. 😡

I’ve just deleted a few rides from strava that I’d imported from Mapmyride. The GPX had my speed as the average speed for the ride and as a result I had some improbable KOM’s…

re private area: since I ride in all directions, I didn’t use home as the centre, I used a nearby bike shop with a 1 mile circumference which my home and neighbourhood falls under.

You can add a number of postcodes to create an exclusion zone. Adding one will make it fairly easy to triangulate the centre if you arrive home in different directions. Overly paranoid perhaps, but given the number of high-value bike thefts in Bristol recently I’m taking no chances.

Having just returned from Afan i thought I’d see what times were set on thesegments were listed and was surprised to see that the White’s climb has had its times & KOM/QOM removed with a note saying it’s been reported as ‘hazardous’!

Just been for a quick road ride, taking in about 8 segments. got one KOM and am 15-30 secs off the pace everywhere else! I’ve got a lot of work to do, especially as I was going flat out (I thought!).

This could easily be the new Call of duty for me!

As an aside, stopping at traffic lights, presumably adds to my time? I can see a few nocturnal TT’s coming up!

hit the ‘report abuse’ button and get it overturned – explain it’s a designated mtb trail and a climb!

maybe someone lost their KOM and spat their dummy?

Only a second off KoM for the Beast of Hope Cross short segment…..it’s great to be able to see where I’m losing/gaining time on people (in this case it’s the looser bits). I don’t think it’s too bad considering I’m on my hardtail. Cained the Screaming Mile the other day too, which was a nice surprise 🙂

Haha, I got fifth and I stopped halfway down for a rest (it was the end of a long day). Must get back there quick (possibly with DH bike) before Strava gets more popular!

Wow, just re-read your post and noticed you were on a HT. Good going!

I do think there should be an element of caution in creating segments for descents in trail centres.
That has the potential to make it dangerous for everybody not just the person chasing the KOM.
I only really push climbing segments hard.

I don’t want to sound like a bed-wetting lefty but I agree with this! Besides, anyone can hoon it downhill. Climbs are the true tests for manly men. 😆

Yeah ain’t they. I thought hoping for top 50% on the ZigZags wasn’t ambitious, turned out I am 700/1000. Only 30s to drop for top 50%, it’s doable! Again again again!

Strava is way hard to compete on road with a mtb or knobly CX but I’ve just spotted a few good off road climbs which are all ready segments which i’m positive will be mine soon 🙂 muhahaha
