Just ordered a frame (and the overpriced drop-outs!) with a view to building it up as a super light single speed. Interested to know what weight people are getting and seeing some builds

I have been thinking of doing just the same thing. In the abscence of anyone else’s pics put yours up when done.

    I ran my 456 up like this;

    was about 22lb.

I’d imagine a whippet with rigid carbon forks would be flyweight.

**gets ready to tell people they’re wrong and p1ss everyone off** 😀

Started well wwaswas, looks about right 😉

Well, with a similar build my alu framed Cube was a smidge over 19lbs (using a set of Park scales Njee!). That was with a Storck fork, tune wheels, single speeded and with fairly heavy X9 cranks. The new build will have the same forks and also be SS, but will have RS8 or Rotor cranks (depending on how quick they turn up), no bar ends, carbon bar and seat post.

    I’m hoping at least sub 19lbs but we’ll see….

    Hmmm, I’m curious too…

Incidentally whats sort of lightish SS Scandal builds have people got?

I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but i’ve just bought a whippet frame too. As it’s my first carbon frame and i know nowt about the things, do i have to face the frame for the BB at all?

ta- will also post pics when done! 😀

Well the Scandal is 300g’s heavier apparently, but I’d imagine its lighter than my cube by some margin.

Shouldn’t have to face the BB as far as I’m aware chap as its a pushfit BB92

    I didn’t on my 456.

do get some helicopter tape for the down tube and bits where cables will rub, though.

no facing on the On One carbons. Whippet it push fit BB anyway but don’t do any of them as if there is an aluminium insert it will be machined and not just a lump of tube.

    here’s one for you njee!:

    18.5lb
whippet ss with sid wordcups, tune on alpine front, CK on alpine rear (sapim cxrays), 2.1 rocket rons, xtr crank +E13 ring, carbon post + slr saddle, CK cog and an sram 8sp chain, mount zoom carbon bars and bar ends, kcnc scwing stem.

no picture’s I’m afraid, but the weight is measure on Ultimate scales not bathroom one!

I’m disappointed, the weights are plausible thus far.

Hmm, so I’m thinking mine should be similar weight to that. Storck fork is 590g’s, SID world cup is C1400g’s. But I’m running slightly heavier tyres but a lighter rear hub.

rexated – what size frame is yours boss?

flange – it is the 18″ job.
your tyres would have to be pretty meaty to offset the stork vs sid weights – get some 2.2 schwalbes on there and light her up!

All built up with pedals and bottle cage – 18.2 lbs. That’s with the SB8’s. Which is ok but not as light as I’d hoped.

Wondering where I can save more weight from if I’m honest.

    Spec list required…

I meant to get some pictures last night but was too busy putting a new chain on after snapping it at Thetford yesterday (again!)

    Spec list is
    Whippet frame (20 inch)
    Storck Rebel fork
    Magura MT8 brakes
Tune rear hub on 355, Halo front hub on 355, small block 8’s tubeless
Middleburn RS8 cranks, middleburn ring, K9 chain
    WCS seat post
    syntace bars and stem
    ritchey foam grips
    Gobi saddle

    Any ideas?

Sounds about right to me to be honest!

Devil’s in the detail though if you want to shave more off – SB8s aren’t the lightest, alu bolts in your brake levers, ti rotor/caliper bolts. Is your stem an F119? Ti bolts in there? KCNC rotors.

    Hmmm

The rotors that are on it are those buzz-saw style ones and I question how light they are.

Maybe a cheeky order in to xcracer might be in order then.

Just a quick one – are Furious Freds really as bad as they make out for punctures/rips?

Oh and yep- its an F119

It baffles me how some folk get their bikes down to crazy weights – some of the WW stuff is sub 15lbs (like the Scale on Bikerumour the other day), is that actually possible? I’m not running gears or sus forks yet I can’t get close, that scale is 2×10 with 100mm forks!

They’re the same carcass as the Ron/Dan, I don’t find their longevity a problem. They don’t, however, have any grip at all. Fine on the back, but there’s very few places I run one on the front!

They do ti bolts on there which are good, if you order 3 things you get a discount too. The one piece top cap/bolt is a good way to save 10g very cheaply!

Awesome stuff – right, I’ll get the debit card out then!

Maybe a Furious on the rear and a Racing Ralph on the front – should save a bit

Flange, you’ll love your frame if it’s anything like my C456. just out of interest though, why do you think the dropouts are over priced? i thought they were about £14 or so which isn’t bad for a nice bit of CnC worked dropouts. you could’ve tried getting them for nowt as you were buying the frame as well? they swapped mine out for free on the C456 as i needed one which allowed for the caliper to be mounted on the outside of the chainstay rather than inside the seat stay.

Pickle – they’re £14 a side, so you need to buy two. They also don’t come with chain tugs so I had to get some DMR ones last minute from the LBS, so that’s another £18.

As for riding it, for the 3 miles I managed before the snappage it felt lovely, quite nervous with the rigid fork (to be expected) but pretty quick

Rocket Ron is lighter than a Ralph.

Ahhhhh then yes, i guess it does work out a bit pricey for the change 🙁
