Shimano Scylence hubs. What happened? Any other silent hubs about?

There was a load of hype and pre-launch test rides in the mags about 18 months ago, but can’t see any for sale. Is it still coming, or has it been renamed and I’ve missed it?

I know of Onyx (£££!!!), what else is super quiet, not just quieter than Hope quiet, or I may go with old XT again. Needs to be available 135mm, QR, don’t care too much about disc or driver style, but all my other stuff is 6 bolt and Shimano HG cassettes. Cheers.

Yeah, I grew tired of the Hope buzz too. My last wheel builds have all been Shimano XT.

The Shimano factory had a massive fire and lots of stuff ended up not being released. I’d imagine it will come out in the next XTR release.

Those who did ride it were very impressed I recall.

Silent clutch? Is that one still for sale in the classifieds?

Oddly enough, I was talking to someone about my Vesper hubs today. As much as I love them, the price is just very silly. I asked about the XTR scylence as I’d happily run Shimano hubs of they got it sorted.

I’m not fussed about hub noise but following destroying my XT freehub over the winter, in an effort to give the new one some longevity I put some winter lube into it before fitting it. The freehub is completely silent – but totally functional…

I thought I’d read that the new Shimano hubs are very quiet and have a similar setup to what the scylence were meant to be, almost silent might be good enough for you. My old XT hubs are much quieter than any Hope, DT, Hunt, Superstar etc hubs

Shimano dropped it because they couldn’t get them as reliable as they wanted.

I’ve had completely silent mavic hubs on crossmax xl wheels. They have the specific spokes, so It was cheaper to buy a whole wheel second hand than 5 spokes. The free hubs do need a bit of love or they howl. Most disconcerting!

Alfine hubs are silent. But probably not what you’re after 😉

The new design Shimano freehub uses some of the Scylence technology, just not all of it.

There’s a guy on mtbr who reckons you can re-instate the Scylence in Shimano hubs.

My cheap calibre commuter hub is silent, it’s a revelation!.

The new Shimano hubs are sometimes silent, sometimes not, seems to depend how you back off. (or give a flick backwards)

I’m quite interested in these, especially the instant engagement – but bloody hell they’re not cheap! Even the front hub is £270 when a Hope Pro 4 is £75! How much!!

Front hubs all feel the same. Has anyone every felt a difference? Its only that people like things to match.

I have an Industry Nine Hydra rear hub for maximum engagement and a hope up front. (I can’t use my hope rear hub now, it just feels broken next to the Hydra.)

I’ve also been riding a set of Bontrager wheels with rapid drive hubs. I upgraded the free hub to get maximum engagement and greased it quite well. The result is almost silent.

The vesper is even more than the rear hydra, £500 for the rear. Would really like to try a silent hub but there needs to be some cheaper options.

My e13 TRSr wheels make a right racket

I had the alivio silent clutch rear years ago and also can attest to how nice it is to ride without the constant clicking.

Admittedly you will now sneak up on people so best have a bell.

My new dt350 hubs on the gravel bike are very quiet. With the standard ratchet (18t I think)

Could get louder once they wear in and the grease thins out though

I’ve an American classic hub that’s pretty quiet. The pawls completely disengage when freewheeling. The freehub has a spring assembly which actuates a cam plate to pull the pawls back in when pedalling.

Assuming it’s reliable it should steal all the hope/dt350 sales.

People who buy Hope hubs aren’t usually bothered by the racket, no?
