I’ve just got a set from Triton for a Fargo build but I’m not so sure about them. I’ve no offroad dropbar experience except for a short spin on a friends Fargo with woodchippers. Nearly every review between the 2 says the newer bar is better as you can set up the levers easily and reaching the brakes from the hoods and drops is better with the Cowchippers.
From above they’re clearly flared but from the side they look like a normal road bar.

Should I give them a go (they’re nearly £90!) or get Woodchippers or Alpkit Bombers?

Hard to say what will suit you best. I got some Cowchippers last week and after a total of one 3 hour, mostly off road ride thought they were great. Levers are very well placed. I think the Woodchoppers would have too much flare for me.

I’ve just ordered a pair of Specialized Hover bars which have a rise on the top section, plus shallow and flared drops. Saw a pair in a shop and I liked them. £90 is a lot of dough though..

If you’ve not used very flared drops before, why not try an On One Midge or the Alpkit version to see if you like it first? Less than a third of the price so much less risk.

That sounds promising djflexure, what other bars have you tried? Midges seem to be very flared, not sure about the Alpkit bars as there’s no published figure for flare or width and not many reviews.

Is the Bomber the successor to the Luxy? With Brant designing for Sonder…?

Variety of road bars – the drops on the Cowchipper are more comfortable (probably due to them being shallow and flared).

Jones bend H bars – Cowchippers (in the drops) are similar but not as flared plus lower, which is better for me.

On One Mary – disliked, narrow, too flared for me

I have a set of the Alpkit Bombers for sale if anyone wants to try? Never used £15?

I was looking at Woodchippers for Fargo, but ended buying these as i wanted silver..

You’re talking me into keeping the Cowchippers I think.

Scud, how wide are the Bombers and where did you get your VO bars from?

Anyone tried the Specialized Hover? Looks interesting.

happybiker – I bought the bars from here. £45, available in black / silver, comfy for my large hands on Fargo.

Alpkit Bomber specs are here, the flare was about right for me, but the actual size of the drop part of the bar is quite short, and i have shovels for hands.

    Love Mud Bomber

Fancied some Cowchippers myself, but I’d be interested in the Bombers Scud.

They’d be replacing some Cowbell 2’s if anyone is interested…

Looks pretty much identical to the Midge to me.

recently fitted alpkit bombers, find I am riding on the hoods 95% of the time now, tops maybe for climbing and drops when I need more control and braking power in rough stuff. I don’t like riding them in the drops on the flat.

Ritchey are producing a flared road bar called the Venturemax. Be worth seeing if eventually they start making a carbon one as they tend to.

FWIW I bought a pair of Alpkit Bombers and the bottom of the drop is far to short imo. Ive tried various off road drops. My favourite is the Soma Junebug bar and have a pair on my old cx bike but after ordering another pair from the US for a new build I find that they won’t accommodate shimano hydraulic brakes and the union for the brake pipe fouls the bend on the bars. If you are going for a non hrydo build I can recommend the Junebug.

Alpkit Bombers vs On One Midges – I far prefer the Bombers, for reasons I can’t really express. The Midges do have very short drops; I felt as if my hands wanted to fall off the back of the Midges.

what is the Bomber flare? I find Midges are too much. Thanks

Have a look at Genetic Digest bars. After trying Midge and Woodchippers I’ve found those to be perfect for good hand support when in the drops and I’ve no problems with setting the brifters(that was an issue on Midge bars with Apex STIs)

Well I’ve now ridden the Cowchippers a bit, my first dirt drop and they seem OK, I could have gone for the 46 instead of the 44 though. They are nice, the only issue I have is with SRAM brifters there isn’t a flat transition from the tops to the shifters like I have with my Ultegra levers on the Zipp bar. If I rotated the levers up the reach to the brake levers would be a bit far away. Seem alright in the drops which is where I’m mostly.
