What is the normal life of a tyre? I've just about finished bulding a road bike and now have to think about tyres.

Front tyre is about 4-5 years old and clearly unuseable. Rear is 2-3 years old and used, ok or not?
Replacement for front is also 2-3 years old and unused, ok or not?

Serviced my boss's Spesh Rockhopper 1992 – original tyres were perishing but still ridable – been kept in the garage most of its life
