The next 10 minutes will be crucial .
As long as he avoids any grinder/frame interface it will be fine.

    Or,it’s all back to ..

What CX bike with disks and a full mudguard option? 🙂

Well, thats the non drive side and 2 spider arms off.

God, it takes a long time, and I supposed to be using the edge or the flat of the grinder?

    The edge

Edge into the top of the axle hole.

Assuming it’s a cutting disk then the edge. Should go through a crank arm like it’s cheese. Make sure there’s nothing too flammable in the line of fire of the sparks.

Was just looking for a picture. Found a few unpleasant ones… be careful with it!

oh, so effectively cutting the crankbolt hole in half? Ah, I was grinding the whole “outside” back to the BB

I’d just cut the crank arm close to the axle on two sides so you can lever it apart and off the axle.

The steel axle’s going to be a lot harder to cut.

Kryton- not quite, I mean here, from the top of the bike, not the side.

Once you’re through to the axle the hole will open up and it should come off. No point cutting into the axle as it’s much, much harder.

    Ah well, new frame time.

The bit on the spider the arrow above points to is conical – narrow end in. Cant get the grinder near it, crank now a pile of crap attached to a frame – which I just slipped and took a chunk out of the chain stay.

Recommendations for frame and fork? 😥

Oh, phew, you did a stealth edit. I came in, saw this –

    Ah well, new frame time.

And assumed you’d chopped your downtube.

Alternatively go into it like this, cheaper than a new frame-

wtf? Just looked at all this and kryton has slipped with an angle grinder and gone into the chain stays!?

    yikes! just a scuff I hope. 😯

Still got yer fingers then ?

    Good.

Frames are cheap compared to fingers and much easier to get hold of.

Heres a link you might find useful…

I recommend you open this link

Oh shit, sorry to hear that Kryton,I thought you were on a roll with your new grinder skilz.
I now feel bad for putting the hex on you with that ‘grinder/frame interface post’ earlier. 🙁

    Giant Defy?

Just a thought, if you can’t shift it & don’t want a trip to the LBS why not try your local back street garage? They’ll probably have a puller that will do the job or just smack it off.

If you’re coming down this way I’ll happily have a go.

    Edit: looks salvageable.

So I reckon thats a ribble / planet x frame for winter thats cost me.

Might get away with those nicks if they are chain-suck sort of deep.

That’ll be fine I reckon. I’d ride it. Just keep an eye on it. If you’re really worried, get a carbon fibre kit and wrap it.

    Or duct tape 🙂

awww shit!! this thread seems to be coming to an abrupt end due to Kryton’s cack-handedness with an angle grinder!
i was hoping it would have had the longevity of his Phall munching escapade! 😉
you should have continued bashing it off with a hammer…15 minutes? you werent even getting warmed up!!

But how do i get the crank off?

Get a drill! Surely it’s a useful tool to have around the house anyway?

    Kryton57
    Full Member

I’ve got a drill. What do I do with it? I do t have a bit big enough to drill out the spindle.

    nemesis
    Free Member

No, you just drill a series of holes into the crank (the part at the top of your pic) in a line(ish) so that there’s hardly any metal holding it together. Then hit it or ride it a bit and it’ll break/split and fall off.

4 or 5mm drill bit I reckon. Alu is soft so it won’t take long to drill a few holes.

Seriously though, if you can secure (what’s left of) the crank arm in a vice or something then use your chisel to **** the end of the axle with your biggest hammer I reckon it’ll go – you just need to have someone/thing to hold or catch the frame when it does.

    wwaswas
    Full Member

put somethign behind the crank arm so you can’t cut the frame and carry on cutting.

if you held the blade parrellel to the ground as it is in that shot and cut into the arm just above the spindle you’d get through without hitting the frame.

EDIT just seen that Kryton trashed his frame then carried on. I almost feeling like retracting my comments above.

If anyone ever asks again why we need LBSs ,show them this thread.
