PSA get your cat’s teeth checked

Turns out that a grand’s worth of dental work would have been covered by John Lewis if only we’d had annual checkups. We didn’t.  Bollocks.

ten years of checkup’s would have probably cost you 2 grand…

How much do they charge for a quick prod in the mouth?

Our cat’s teeth are always given a quick check when he goes for his annual booster jabs.  I don’t think it’s an extra, just something they look at while he’s being generally prodded and poked.

Fortunately he’s pretty docile – they stopped checking our old cat’s teeth as she was less than keen on being examined.

Yeah, ours get checked when going in for jabs. Found a huge plaque build up last time, recommended some extra crunchy dental biscuits for a while and all cleared up.

I guess anyone on a real tight budget could either a)don gauntlets and check yourself or b) maybe swap up their usual biscuits for a dental biscuit once a year.

We have vax for life for three of our 4 and teeth checked.

We have had one that developed gingivitis and her teeth had to be taken out. Our rescue carries cat flu and it came out in him as gingivitis. He lost all his teeth six months after we got him (cost over a grand). He’s six now and the boss cat.

AIUI needs to be repeated every year.

Every year.

It was nowhere near a grand to get a bunch of teeth taken out for the one of ours that needed it.

(And don’t blame us for neglect, they were rescues and this was when we first started fostering them.)

Yes annual jabs is the norm. A lot of owners don’t keep it up, however.

Yeah My dog has yearly ‘Vax/worming’

His insurance is £45 per month but he also has a vax/worm plan on top of that which is another £14 per month…I think that inludes a few extras such as an anual ‘free’ nail clip and general check up though, I’d hope that includes a dental appraisal! I’d have to ask ‘the boss’ for details, I just pay 50% of it and don’t ask questions unless theres a problem, lol.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a cat maintenance thread on here before, my daughter wants a cat and I’m now worried that if we get one then their dental bill will bankrupt us.

Cats/dogs are really not cheap to maintain…cats are probably a bit cheaper than dogs, but if you want to look after them properly…it costs.

I mean you could just wing it and not have vax and insurance in place…you might get lucky, or you you might get a ten grand bill thrown at you, and then its ‘good night, snowball, you were cute for a while, here’s a lethal injection for you’.

You can avoid most cat dental bills by utilising a dry biscuits diet as their main food source.    5 cats over many years not a single issue and always a comment from the vet how goo their teeth are.

Our old cat was a mature rescue and a right fussy bugger.  Would only eat wet food.  He had most of his teeth removed over several years (covered by insurance each time).

Our current cats were adopted as kittens,  they’ve always had a mix of biscuits and wet.  We normally have a few left out in a bowl in case they feel like a snack when we’re out in the day or asleep at night.  One of them prefers them to wet food most of the time.  On both checkups the vet commented on the healthy state of their chompers.

Fwiw, they settled on Purina one.  Cheaper brands weren’t entertained for long.  Surprisingly, they considered the premium dry foods we bought them from Pets at Home to be inedible shite 🤷😂

I have a thing for our cat and dog. Pet Plan via our vet. About £30 per month for both. 6 monthly check ups and all jabs/worming type medication is included. It was recommended by my nephew who is the most tight fisted person I know, so I took him at his word regarding it’s value.

Currently looking at around £700 for both of them to get their teeth cleaned though 😳

Despite being 6 months old and only been to the vet 3 times, she’s learned fast that going in the basket means an anal probe at least, you can hardly blame her.
