There was one of these not long back and it was worth a listen, I think it was a dubstep variant though instead of dance.

    Was bloody awesome!

Was sitting (or standing, dancing) up in the balcony above the orchestra. Genuine hairs standing up moments… Insomnia…

The drum & bass at the end though sounded a little muddy, not sure how it came across at home but I think the sheer pace of the music got lost a little in the size of the room. Might have been different from a different seating area. But that is being a bit critical of what was a superb evening!

Spent a lot of time just looking at the orchestra, working out who was playing which part, and where the sounds were coming from.

There were some people properly going for it up there as well!

If people fancy a listen while pretending to work today:

Watching at home I too was trying to view where the particular sound was coming from. Sadly the directors couldn’t tell when a change in beat/when something was about to ‘drop’ so the cameras missed that particular instrument. I was impressed that they actually ‘mixed’ most of the tunes together. The orchestra must’ve been knackered afterwards

So Paul Hartnoll was in the audience, must have been a real buzz to hear Belfast played like that.

Watched it live last night (albeit on the computer)… One of those things that could have gone either way, but they pulled this one off incredibly! Genuinely the best thing on the Radio in some time… 😀

Totally underwhelmed.. I had to turn it off after the first 3 or 4 chart-toppers, which by definition are very bland to have created mass appeal..
Unlistenable regardless of the orchestra’s dexterity..

    Did it improve at all?

Yunki, listen to the rendition of Insomnia about two thirds of the way through. the highlight of the show for me and a great example of just how tight the orchestra were. superb!

the first tracks could have been seen as a bit cheesy in places but the concert was celebrating bbc’s 20yrs in Ibiza so you’re bound to have a few that have not grown well. but seeing the orchestra work their magic was amazing, and as above there were definitely a few hairs being raised when crescendos were reached.

I thought it was quite well done apart from a few messy segways but certainly nothing groundbreaking, Jeff Mills & Montpellier Philharmonic : Blue Potential is a far more cohesive/structured collaboration of the musical genres.

Nils Frahm & A Winged Victory for The Sullen on 5th August (wednesday) will be a masterpiece though, looking forward to that one.

Was it Nero that did the dubstep orchestra? That was pretty decent too.

Just listening to this now – about halfway through ATM.

Go, Belfast, Smokebelch, Your Love all sound awesome.

Ella Eyre seems like a nice girl, but I’m not happy with her rendition of Good Life – despite it sounding amazing played by an orchestra.

I was impressed that they actually ‘mixed’ most of the tunes together.

I was thinking there could have been a bit more “mixing” effect to make it really special and celebrate that unique creative facet of dance music.

Nitpicking though, it is a wonderful thing and yet another example of why we should treasure the BBC.

PS. Fingers crossed they do Strings of Life.

Very good. Bit miffed I knew nothing about this before though, would’ve liked to have been there.

Started listening on iPlayer radio, then started watching on red button, but the sound on the TV red button broadcast sounded really weak (not just my TV’s sound, the mix sounded very different), so reverted back to the iplayer radio. The TV version was also edited shorter? So my recommendation would be to listen to the radio version.

The last tune in particular was blimmin great. 🙂

Just caught up with this on iPlayer. Don’t mind admitting that I blubbed like a baby throughout! So many good friends, good times, so long ago.
    26 mins Good Life
    105mins Strings of Life

It was ace. What was Pete Tong doing though?

Did anyone else notice when they played Go, the guy playing the red Nord triggered the start of the right here/right now sample used earlier?

Didn’t notice that, though that was probably because I was bouncing round the room. Pete Tong was certainly grinning widely during Cafe del Mar, as I would have been! Need to find a club night for forty-somethings.
