Friend of mine was 28 before he realised that Hastings wasn’t in Scotland. He only learned whey he tried to deliver 20 tonnes of plywood from Port of Tyne rather than Tilbury and was given the cost.

Unlike nearby Washington, it post-dates its namesakein the United States, being named during the American Revolutionary War by a local colliery owner to commemorate the British capture of the city. The village cricket field is named “Bunker Hill”, after another famous battle in that war.
