First time – my gear lever had fallen off and was in the passenger footwell. While I was grovelling for it and trying to screw back in I didn’t see the cop car behind.

Second time – it was 3:00am. FFS! Didn’t they have anything better to do?

Third time – 95 on the M4. I was astonished they bothered stopping me going that slow.

Then they moved over to speed cameras. I can see them. So haven’t been done in 15 years.

    SPEED: 60 in a 50
WHERE: on my way to work, through the same speed camera I would drive past at least twice a day.
WHY: I have no idea, when it flashed I looked at my speedo, sure enough I couldn’t believe my eyes!
CIRCUMSTANCE: clear road, no other traffic or peds.

1st time: 90mph on the M1 (on a Suzuki 750). Just been at Santa Pod for the drag racing and obviously hadn’t switched into “legal” mode.

2nd time: 34mph in a 30. Just on the way into Jedburgh. There’s a “national speed limit” bend, then the 30 sign immediately after it. I took my foot off the throttle after the bend, but was just relying on the car slowing down – which it didn’t do quickly enough. They’ve since put up some of those “countdown to 30” signs. Grrr!

Got banned for 18 months for speeding in ’96, now that I look back I was lucky not to get time in clink.

Haven’t got on a motorbike since.

    And this one.

What was the ban for Ziggy – 160 in a 30 outside a primary school on the back wheel?

You might have had trouble with the one which did me – from the speed I got done for (85 in a 70) they nabbed me the instant they saw me (and I saw them) as I came over the brow of the hill, as I was on the brakes sharpish. A forward facing mobile camera, obviously.

Excuse? Depends what you mean by an excuse. Either because I was on my way to Afan and wanted to get as much riding in as possible, didn’t see the camera before they nabbed me, or didn’t work out why people in front of me were braking. No remorse/guilt (apart from getting caught), as it was a perfectly safe speed in the conditions.

Only time I got points was back in ’95,drove down the M6 from Lancs to Birmingham,Sunday morning in November, not much traffic.
Week later letter from GMP lands on the doormat, done by a camera in a van on a bridge near Haydock,90mph,3 points £40 fine.
Thing was, the car I had at the time was the least powerful one I had owned,a 1.4 Rover!
In earlier times,1984 to 88,owned a couple of Mk2 Escort RS2000’s,quite often got stopped by cops & ‘advised’ about my driving. On one occasion was going round a corner on opposite lock, steering car on the throttle, was seen by plod on foot who radioed through to car up the road, who pulled me over.
Cheeky buggers tried to tell me I was out of control!!
    Grown up since then tho!

I”m an expat living in Belgium & constantly had both cars & (fast) motorbikes during the 13 years between getting licence and emigrating – never once got nicked for speeding.

Moved to Belgium – get caught 3 to 4 times per year! They are so f*cking sneaky where they hide you wouldn’t believe it. The only positive is that there are no points so pay the fine and move on. Typical cost is between €85 – 150 so could easily have bought a nice carbon frame with the money….

SP60 ?(speeding on a motorway) on the M6 at 7am Sumday morning in 2001. No speed indicated on the fine.

Me and my FiL on our way to Donnington for the World Superbikes in my Saab Turbo.

Took the points and paid the fine, it was a fair cop…..snapped their hand off actually as I was well over a ton so thanked myself lucky for not being banned.

Not ashamed as the road conditions / traffic suited the speed IMO.

What – Lots over the years
How – Driving faster than they wanted me too
Why – I am an anachist and refuse to be constrained by their petty minded rules*

*Not the argument when I was banned for 1 month for 114mph on a near empty dual carriage way in good conditions**

**It takes a lot of luck and a good lawyer to get just 1 month ban for 114mph when you already have 6 points for speeding***

***Speed is wrong kids – Don’t do it****

    **** Good fun though

Got done once in 13 years of driving back home. That was for 41 in a 30 on a 3-lane road at 2am without another car in sight! My fault all the same, knew there was a camera and was driving at 30, but lost concentration and the speed crept up.

But out here in France, it’s mental. Wife and I have been done 3 times between us in 6 months since we got a vehicle on French plates. Wife got done for 131kph on the motorway! (Limit=130kph!). I got done a few weeks ago for 120kph on the motorway. Limit went down from 130 to 110 for a tunnel, I very carefully drove at 110 all the way through. Put my foot down as I left the tunnel. Flash, flash, 130 sign 100m further on! Camera was on the central reservation with it’s back up against the rock wall separating the two tunnels. Impossible to see it.

91mph in a 70 under very heavy braking. £60 – 3 points. Had they gone for peak rather than average speed over a set distance I would have been screwed.

Excuse – holiday traffic on the A9 was pissing me right off and I wanted to get past it all.

This was a road I travelled on everyday and was a 40mph zone (hence the painted sign on the road). Then they changed it overnight to 30mph and just changed the sign on the post from 40 to 30. I challenge anyone to notice that when they do the same journey everyday. Cops parked just up the road behind a hedge with a speed gun and I got 3 points and £60 for 35mph. Not happy!

Got done once, about 11 years ago. Doing 52mph in a 40.

In my defence, it was on a dual carriageway with a 60mph limit, which then changed to a 40 for about 300 yards approaching a roundabout. All I’d done was take my foot off the gas and was crusing down to the roundabout but they had a mobile camera hidden in bushes.

Been clean and sensible ever since.

There was loads of us got done. A test case went to court and they lost. At the end of the day the new speed limit was posted and we were above it. Still not happy though!

Once in the UK for 32 in a temporary 30 limit
Once in France [back in 1986] for 235kph on the Autoroute heading back to the ferry at Le Havre – 900FF fine, which was around £100 [a lot of money then]

(“mister” munqe chick posting) driving miss munqe chicks 54hp 1.2l skoda at a baby killing lock-me-up-and-throw-away-the-key 83mph on the M4 from cardiff to swansea (they always have vans on the over bridges, I now know…). To go see her gran who is in a home (where’s the moral justice there?!).

Shouldnt complain though, in 18 years of riding motorbikes (currently an R1) I’ve never been caught speeding on two wheels. Which is just as well as it might just be beyond the 3-points bracket….

been done a fair few times, never had more than 6 in total and licence is clean now

’96 – 98 in a 70 in a work Rover 220 turbo on the M65 (my job was to clean it), Excuse? I was 20, I was driving a rover turbo!
’01 – 73 in a 60 Speed camera on the A1 between Edinburgh and Berwick. Excuse? who wants to do 60 on that strech of road?
’02 – 98 in a 70 on the M40, Excuse driving home to Leeds from a weeks work in London to see the Mrs.
’07 – 104 in an 80 on the Autorute to Morzine, no points though and the fine was pretty cheap. 35 Euros IIRC. Excuse? I knew i wouldn’t get any points 8)

I always drive above the limit out of built up areas if possible and safe, I see the national speed limit sign as the go like **** sign, going fast is fun!

Got done loads on bikes when younger, now doing 40,000 plus a year as a service engineer and currently have a clean licence. I see the fact that I have a clean licence as a daming inditement of the ability of the Scottish police to catch speeding drivers!

My best speeding story…. In ’96 I was riding down the M1 on a quiet dry sunday afternoon two up on a GSXR, got involved with a couple of sports cars who were driving way faster than I normally did on the motorway, like 140mph+, they turned off but I kept going about 120 odd. Caught up with some slower traffic, a car then loomed large in my mirrors and put its lights on. Copper gets me in the car, says they’ve been following me for ten miles, I thought, bugger that’s the licence gone, he says we’ve clocked you at 96mph what do you think to that? I’ll take that, thanks! I said. guy reckoned I’d been riding well and hadn’t been a danger to anyone but they had to give me some punishment. A lot of traffic cops are bikers so understand the need for speed I reckon.

His mate was outside chatting to my lass, reckoned she had to be mental to get on the back of a bike going that fast. She pointed out that she often fell asleep on the motorway as she trusted me and it was so boring! (I used to feel her head resting on my back when this happened, so knew to be a bit more carefull)

Got caught at close to 70mph on the A3 coming away from Richmond Park going south – everyone in the fast lane was going the same speed and did most days.

Also got caught for jumping a red light – wouldn’t normally but 2 lanes and was in the left lane which was going slowly so as the lights changed switch to the right lane as knew I could get through before the last car in the left lane. Snap decision, wouldn’t have done it if I’d thought about it…and seen the camera!

3 pts £60 fine for parking above padley george in Derbyshire astride a solid white line, expected a ticket but not the points. Had parked in the same place year after year before that experience without issue. Needless to say careful about where I park up in the peaks now.

36 in a 30 – fair enough I can’t complain because I was speeding but this was downhill on a dual carriageway with a camera van hiding in the shadows under a bridge at the bottom of the hill.

I was offered a ‘speed awareness’ course at £90 and no points rather than the £60 fixed penalty and 3 points. I went into the course expecting to be preached to by the speed nazis. But after a classroom group session and about an hour on the road one to one with an advanced driving instructor I have to say that I think these courses should be offered to all drivers and not just those that happen to stray over the speed limit by a relatively small amount in the areas that offer them. It’s improved my driving and general awareness I think…

Ok I’ve had a few speeding tickets over the years – two of the most notable was doing 97mph on the M5 – racing a Porsche 911 – in a Datsun stanza (1.6 always an optimist) –got caught by a police car parked up on the slip road – He pulled both of us – fortunately 5min early we had been doing 125mph – it was my bosses company care & he was sat in the passenger seat not very amused

Second one was on the back road from the Kendal roundabout to Bowness – we’d be staying in a cottage in Crook – My daughter had left her favourite teddy – so I had flown up the next day – 100yds from the cottage a copper stepped out from a bush with a laser gun got done for 74mph in a 30mph ( the week before it was a 40) – that landed me in caught – the first day of a new job – 6pts -£150 and a written warning

    Speeding no big nor clever

In my ignorant youth I thought it sensible to try to drive from Edinburgh to Portree and back in the same day. Got caught doing 92 on a single stretch carriageway of the A9 just south of Aviemore. 6 points, £300 fine. Not big and not at all clever. It took me up to 9 points – not a nice position to be in. Stoopid fecker! Now no points 🙂

Got pulled by Latvian Police driving through the night from Lithuania To Latvia to catch an early flight home from a lads trip to eastern europe. About 5am in the middle of nowhere. Very different experience than being pulled by the English police. Marched me to his car to be with his mate, both carrying handguns. His words ‘Big speed, big problem’ Gulp! Told me i’d have to pay an on the spot fine of around £60. Had to agree but when i asked for a receipt it dropped to £30, then when i said I only had £20 on me and i’d get the rest from the car suddenly £20 was enough and they turfed me out to carry on the journey! Ah, easy to bribe corrupt traffic coppers, why don’t we have more of them……….

My wife stopped doing that after I dropped 60mph in a very short distance for a speed camera. She very nearly got clocked at 110 by herself…

True – but not exactly sensible when you have to put a full day in the office in the middle.
