OT: CIS tax payments – checking they've been paid?

I’ve worked for a few ‘dodgy’ Contractors this year, and been paid via CIS.
How do I find out that if my contributions have been paid to HMRC?

You should get a monthly statement from the contractor stating your earnings and CIS deductions. This is your proof that you have suffered CIS deductions for HMRC. If the contractor hasn’t paid over the deductions it isn’t your fault and shouldn’t affect you getting a tax refund.

As craig says. If you think a contactor may be dodgy and default on paying the tax deducted over then contact HMRC and ask. A heads up might avoid a contractor going pop owing less rather than more!

Yes, I’ve got the payslips, but have read stories where the monies have not been paid to HMRC, and then the Contractor (me) is still liable for the tax.

Well you could always ring HMRC and ask, although it can be painful e.g. 40mins on hold to get through to someone.

If they haven’t paid over the taxes collected it isn’t your fault and HMRC don’t come after you and they still have to make any refunds due.
HMRC won’t confirm if your money has been paid over as its not your account.

You’re the subbie. As long as you’ve evidence of tax being deducted you’ll get the credit.

I called HMRC last week at 07:50. Put through straight away.

It’s happened to me before, I just needed to submit prove of tax deducted, I got a letter confirming it was all legit from my side. On the phone they said they would go after the contractor for the unpaid taxes, it was easy enough to sort.
