Somethin weird going on for me – when I look at the latest posts it’s showing one I made 23 min ago, and then others which were last updated many hours ago.  I know that’s not true – because earlier this morning I saw threads that were being posted on, and even contributed to some – but they don’t appear on the latest posts…

    Are STW ready for this:

    https://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php/2024/12/ofcom-publish-new-online-uk-internet-safety-codes-of-practice.html

Another forum I frequent is shutting down due to this, not because of nefarious content but the potential costs due if somebody takes offence over something and OFCOM come knocking.

there’s possibly consequences for the big platforms (face ache/instagram etc) and some of the vile stuff hosted

yeah, someone said a while back it’s to do with cacheing or something, and affected free members but not paid, that’s bollocks though as I’m seeing exactly the same thing!

I can no longer post images?

img then/img in pointy or square brackets doesnt work, and neither does the button in the toolbar (brings up the window but nothing posts).

I don’t know if this has been mentioned before. Clicking the link to take you to the latest post on a thread sometimes takes you to the page before the last one. This thread for example. I click on the last post link, it takes me to page 33 even though there are several posts on page 34. Small beer with everything else that’s wrong, but an irritation nonetheless.

For those like me who click on a thread but find the latest posts aren’t there, if you click refresh they’ll appear.

Amusing that the Megasack confirmation emails travel from one mail system to another over the internet quicker than the pages on this site take to load when you click on them.

Will be fixed in the new forum 🙂

I’m logged in but have dozens of adverts, some are just one line of forum then another advert.

I’ve logged out and back in, cleared cache.

I’m not sure if this is a problem, but when viewing the Can I post images as a free member? thread I get a “Not Secure” warning in the address bar (Edge on Windows 10). I’m guessing it’s something to do with all the image posting & embedding.

Other threads with embedded images don’t seem to give this error.

Probably not a problem but I though it was worth mentioning in case there is a vulnerability.

Quick update as we head towards the quiet time at the end of the year.

New forum is going well. Still all on our dev server right now, nothing style/design wise is set but here’s a couple of screen grab teasers…

Little bit of under the hood technical info for you…

The new forum exists in it’s own database that is separate from the rest of the site. It integrates well with the rest of the site but the sluggish performance that currently exists for those users with a big ‘record’  of activity we expect to be fixed. It’s the integration of the forum with the rest of the site in a single table that is the root cause of the page slowness, particularly for active members with a big track record. The separation of these two aspects of the site structure we expect to give a big performance boost.

We aren’t going to do anything on the live site until the new year, because Christmas. But as I’ve mentioned before the first step will be to have part of the new forum running side by side with the existing forum. A gently, gently approach while we migrate the entire forum to the new database.

    Cheers bud.

I’m not sure if this is a problem, but when viewing the Can I post images as a free member? thread I get a “Not Secure” warning in the address bar (Edge on Windows 10). I’m guessing it’s something to do with all the image posting & embedding.

If the page hotlinks to an image on another site which is served via http rather than https then I’d expect that alert. If that is the case, it’s intentional and desired behaviour rather than an issue with the forum.

I don’t get that alert, but I have an atypical loadout.

Ooh, so much a balance of shame vs humblebrag for the users who just realised that the slowness of the forum is related to the amount of sh*t they have posted…. lolz

I can’t log in today on the PC… This happens fairly regularly… I know it’s a known issue but can’t remember the reason for it. Will this be sorted with the new forum or is the login unconnected?

Yes I’m loving that everyone who posts “it’s really slow for me” is doing nothing but making it even slower for them.

    Yeah, that’s mildly irritating.

If “new forum coming 2025” successfully passes evaluation, I imagine that a lot of these niggles will be moot as it’ll be a wholly different system. (We’ll have a whole load of new niggles to moan about instead 🙂 )

I got some password reset notification but it’s the same so someone been fiddling behind the scenes, ta 🙂

Work productivity goes down the drain again 😀

That’s a relief. Wouldn’t recognise the place at all without a load of people moaning 😉
