MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
So, having lost the DX P7 torch I bought last year, and my old halogen lumi battery having died through lack of use, I need some new lights. I don't do a massive amount of nightriding, so not looking to spend loads. Mostly 2-3 hr twisty singletrack rides in the Surrey Hills.
Obviously I can buy another DX MTE torch. Dirt cheap, light weight, plenty of light, but that's about it. I found the hard edge to the beam annoying, as it killed all contrast with the dark areas, and there was something funny about the beam colour that made it really hard for me to pick out details. I had a few stacks due to completely failing to see really obvious roots. The clicky mode thing also annoyed me with the pointless flashing functions. Still, not bad for £20 ish.
Or there's the DX Magicshine/Bastid light. Cheap, plenty of light, decent runtime, but questionable build quality and non-waterproof battery.
Or what about Airbike or LUU from On-one? Does the extra cost over the Magicshine actually show up in terms of better quality? £110 for an Airbike P7 Everlight SL looks OK. Although that's about the top end of my budget.
Any comments?
Cheers,
Jon
troutlight?
you could get a new lumicycle battery of the website?
Troutlight is too much cash (£250ish all in IIRC), and to be honest I don't see the point of *that* much light.
New lumi battery is ~£90, so more expensive than the DX options, and not far off the complete airbike prices to make a not-all-that-bright set of lights work.
Have you contacted Smudge regarding a new battery for your lumi Halogen ?.
Just a thought.
🙂
L.
Keep your eye on the Lumi clearance dept, got an HID for £120 just before Xmas
I'd go for the DX
It can't be too difficult to waterproof the battery - self-amalgamating tape?
Cheers for the recomendation SQ225917
I was just going to say that it is way over Jons budget .
DX bastid is OK but you will wait a few weeks for it to arrive
airbike and LUU use the same emitter and are a bit better made than the DX . but I dont think £60 better made .
From your post above the DX seems to be the one for you if you dont mind the wait .
You can get a battery from Smudge for around £50 ish
I've got a spare DX light, the later Magicshine version. Swap it for a pair of SRAM shifters that are compatible with matchmaker? Anyone?
I was gonna sell it on ebay but the prices have plummeted so far as to not make it worthwhile.
Might just keep it and run a dual bar and helmet DX P7 setup...
Slight hijack, but does anybody know if smudge can re-build a laptop battery ?
Jon, would you be interested in a 2nd hand Hope Vision 2 (with new-ish Epic battery)?
It's an excellent light, but I fancy treating myself to the new version.
Hi Takisawa2
Not worth it as I would have to prize open the case to get the old cells out and getting it to fit back together again and also fit back into youre laptop is too much hassle. Sorry
Jon - if you are anywhere near Guildford, welcome to have a look at the DX lights I use up in the Surrey Hills - was lucky with a 10 day delivery - been great so far.
