After rounding the through axle at the rear of one of my bikes it has been unusable for 6 weeks.

During this time I have attempted to replace the thru axle 5 times. Every time I order one it has arrived and it just does not fit and is incompatible.

I have now tried my best to solve this problem once and for all and searched the internet thoroughly but still can’t find anything which I can safely say it will fit and can’t see an end to the problem in sight.

I don’t know where I’m going wrong. I’ve put countless hours into this.

    The old maxle was:
    Sram Maxle Stealth M12x1.75 174mm
    Length: 174mm
    Thread Length 20mm
    Thread Pitch 12×1.75
    Rear Hub: Boost 148x12mm

I’ve ordered many maxles some of them £20 or more and they just don’t fit.

Assuming that “rounding” means the allen key spins, a needle file and a bit of patience can open up the hex to the next size so an 8mm key will fit. It’d also help if we knew why the new ones won’t fit, and what makes them incompatible. Are you trying to replace a non-Rockshox item with a Rockshox item, and is it definitely supposed to be a 1.75mm pitch?

Shouldn’t a boost maxle be 180mm, Rockshox or brand X. If your rounded off one is definitely Rockshox then your specs are correct apart from the length. Buy a thread gauge to double check. Or check against standard M12 threaded rod or nut as its 1.75 pitch.
Also a greased or oiled axle torqued to 12nm shouldn’t be rounding off unless the bit you’re using is chewed up. If you haven’t got a torque wrench find someone who has then make a note of where the writing on the axle head lines up on the dropout or take a pic on your phone for future reference, the word torque on my axle head starts at 1 o clock for example.

Why don’t the replacements fit? What axle have you bought?

The most important part is getting the length and thread pitch correct. SRAM usually say a 174mm axle is for 142mm spacing and the 180mm axle is for 148mm boost but it actually depends on the thickness of the dropouts etc so it is still possible to have a 174mm axle in a boost frame.

I presume you’ve taken those specs off the actual axle as they’ll be etched on it usually?

I’ve just bought one of these to replace the maxle on my scandal.

There’s a picture next to a tape measure to show the size. It might be a mm or 2 too short?

    Is your bike listed here?

Do away with that QR lever!!

    Here’s a 174mm Maxle Stealth.

As above, not listed as boost but that may depend on your dropouts. They have a bunch of other lengths.

New ones won’t fit they were all the wrong length. Too short.

specs are all written on the old maxle and on bike spec data online

Axle finder website returned this after putting in my bike specs:

    Lightning Bolt-on Axle – Rear 12 mm x 174 mm x 1.75 Thread

But the cost of it is rediculous. 1/4 of a full days work after tax for me just for an axle. I believe this is compatible but looking for it cheaper elsewhere.

Plus it’s from the USA so going to take ages with Shipping.

Is there one with those sizes but from somewhere else ??

If you’ve bought 5 replacements already and none of those work, then post a picture of the original axle with the etching visible and the replacements you’ve bought next to it. Then we can be sure to get the right size.

This is probably what you need:
    https://r2-bike.com/ROCK-SHOX-Thru-Axle-Maxle-Stealth-12%C3%97142-Standard-Frames-174-mm

This one is available on prime:
    Maxle

Again though, if you’ve bought 5 and none of them are right, post up a picture before you buy another.

SJS Cycles sell Robert Axle stuff in the UK. I bought one a couple of weeks ago, arrived in a couple of days.

Boost Scout Frame use a 180mm maxle.

    Sram Maxle Stealth M12x1.75 180mm

    Confirmed : https://www.wiggle.co.uk/nukeproof-scout-290-mountain-bike-frame-2020/

In that case, the 180mm brand x 1.75 axle will work

    12mm

dhrider – I’m sure you’re right, which makes it really annoying that the nukeproof website lists it as.

Rear Axle: Sram Maxle Stealth M12x1.75 174mm

The Brand-x ones suggested above have worked for me too. The page at https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/brand-x-bolt-thru-axle/rp-prod176624 has an image with the dimensions of the different sizes, measure yours up and order away!

This one sounds like it might work for you. Just happened to be browsing pinkbike earlier and noticed this

If replacements have all been too short, surely buying a 180mm is the obvious choice as I suggested, instead of doing the very definition of insanity 😀

Surely it’s got to be worth contacting Nukeproof for clarification and to see whether they carry spares; perhaps Hotlines too?

    grannyjone

I’ve measured it, the maxle is 174mm not 180mm

    grannyjone
    Free Member

It even says 174mm length on it.

I cannot find any maxle that matches my specs at all. Apart from on that very expensive American website.

    Length: 174mm
    148×12
    M12 x 1.75 thread pitch
    20mm thread length

The painful search goes on & on & on & the useless bike remains in storage for the forseeable.

Item 142994110698 on eBay matches but it’s £53.

Have the 5 you have ordered previously not been the right/same size then?

    simonhuscroft

What about this?….. 2mm shorter but it might not matter too much depending if there was any spare thread on the original.

Yes that does seem to match.

They’ve all either been too long or too short. I think the thread pitch has always been Okay.

It’s mad that these cost £53 each. For a bike that cost me £1300. Is this saying that the maxles alone are worth nearly 1/10th of the total price of the bike ? WTF

Yes one of those options does seem to match apart from being be 2mm too short, I’m not sure if that would matter as I’ve never been in a position where I’ve had to buy a maxle that is not exactly the same length as the original

    Will this work ? Is
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XB3MGWP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_b4i2Eb0D4KNT1

One thing that cocerns me is it says it’s for 12X142 while mine is specced as 12×148 but everything else is specced the same. Is this a concern ?

Oh just noticed it’s out of Stock anyway that’s the death of that option

Extremely tricky buying a replacement maxle the right size. I never knew it was anywhere near this tricky.

Is this any good – http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-maxle-stealth-rear-mtb/rp-prod160854?

The specs. look right, but when you select one it only offers a size of 12x142mm (which I assume is the hub).

Grannyjone You haven’t said What frame and what year. trevmcdonald said scout 290. If so I’ve just zoomed in on the scout photo and 174mm is correct, wiggle site is wrong, so why not buy another sram maxle stealth 174mm how can it not fit. Just buy for 12 142 because the dropouts are skinny despite the boost hub.

    greeny30

Correction, just the NDS dropout is skinny, so 142 axle not boost axle is required.

    simonhuscroft

As long as the original was fine just get that size. Wouldn’t bother about the description saying boost or non boost.

If the original is completely rounded beyond use use some pliers or cut a flat into it and bolt it up and see how much thread is engaged. If there is any spare thread poking out at the driveside when it’s bolted up the 172mm will be fine.

    grannyjone

Thanks – That looks like it is the right size.
    I’ve ordered this one.
It says 142×12 rather than 148×12 but I think that’s just the hub. The length, tread length and tread pitch all match what is stated on the original maxle.

Scout 290 year 2020 and I’m just going to order for 12 142

Can anyone confirm the correct rear thru axle with a lever for an on-one scandal.
Got the new bike over xmas and want to change to lever for ease of use.
Alot of different sizes out there regarding length.
    Would this work:
    KTM thru

My axle is 169 mm in length. From the shoulder to the end of threads

Anyone shed any light on this?
Finding all kinds of sizes but nothing appears to suit the scandal

    TIA
