carpark at the bottom of box hill is national trust but now says you need to pay via an app paybyphone. we are NT members but i could find no option for it in the app so ended up just paying.

cant seem to find how to do it now im back either, potentially im being dim?

we still have the old stickers in the car window too.

for those NT carparks that are app only how do you prove you are NT?

I’m not a NT member but I have the Paybyphone app so assume it’s separate.

Surely easier to email the nt than post on here!

Just don’t pay. They can’t do anything.

sure i can email NT on a sunday and expect a rapid response, or i could ask a bunch of outdoorsy people who likely have used the same carpark and might be able to tell.me the really easy thing ive missed.

its boxhill stepping stones carpark to be precise.

other places have a machine where you scan your card for a ticket. this just had the app with no option to say you were NT

as parking goes it was reasonably steep at £9 for over 4 hours

    No machine anywhere?

Speak to a NT person on site, they can give out a temporary pass. There’s a snack kiosk, f’rinstance

we still have the old stickers in the car window too.

They ignore those, too many on auction sites 🙂

They issue a compliance notice; plead ignorance, they must get this loads with the elderly (me elderly rather than you youngsters)

I think you just scan your card at the machine.

Some, like Tatton park you still have to pay because they are managed by others. Tatton is Cheshire Council

no kiosk at the carpark, no machine that i could see. just a big sign saying paybyapp.

i suppose i could have gone into to talk to the staff at the top of boxhill next to the cafe but we didnt head that way

I’d have put my card in the window/on my dash with the expiry date facing up if it were me rather than £9!!

@Lister is correct (I’m pretty sure we come from a similar point of knowledge) and the most you’ll get is grovelling ticket of how car park fees support their work.

Can see this becoming the norm everywhere because it’s so easy to implement. No machine on site just a sign and you can get a revenue sharing partner (a bunch of shithouses) to administer it from a cheapo office suite. It’s a money grabbers wet dream in a desperate money grabbing country.

Most car parks now have a QR Code, which links to MiPark, or similar, some allow pay by machine on site where you can pay by contactless, but my experience, and that of many others, is that there’s often a poor phone signal available so either the app times out, or just takes ages, or doesn’t work at all. Lacock NT car park puts bags over the machines at the end of the season, so the car park is free for everyone.
Uffington White Horse car park does have a machine, members are free, obviously, and you scan the QRCode on your membership card and put the printed ticket on your dashboard. RSPB sites are similar and if you’re an NT member you get free entry to English Heritage sites, and vice versa – this encouraged me to go to Stonehenge earlier this year, for the first time in around fifty years!

Back when I was a NT member, the most value we got from it was from free parking. I think my approach here would be to ignore it and respond to any tickets issued with “you can waive the fine or you can stick your ongoing annual family membership up your arse.”

I put my card in the car window of a NT car park near Llangollen. The machine gave no idea what to do for NT members.

I think Nostell had machines where you scanned your membership card and it gave you a free ticket?

Some info that might help here.. including how to claim back your paid-for parking ticket. Bumpf for the location suggests parking is free for NT members.

thanks yep i tried the first link already, nothing there about a carpark with no machine just a sign to pay by app.

the carpark is the stepping stones one, so a small one at the bottom of the hill, not the main (rammed all the time) carpark at the top of the hill.

think i will email them. part of the reason for being a member is the free parking. the parking app they use should have the ability to enter your membership number. its a massive miss that there is absolutley bugger all mentioned on the sign or in the app on how NT members can get their parking benefit.

Pay by App discriminates against anyone without a smartphone, particularly older visitors and also assumes you have signal, something not always possible at NT sites.  So I usually just don’t bother paying.  Never had a ticket yet.
