I’m heading here with MrsReady in a few weeks, so any recommendations of places to eat, things to see & do, or what to avoid would be appreciated.  Flying in so will only have hire car access for a couple of days.  Any day trips to Venice, Verona etc worth a look?
Never been to Italy before so a bit unsure of what to expect?!

Verona by train was good and I recall easy enough. Think there is a lift at Malcesine up Mt Baldo. Sirmione at the southern end is nice but will be rammed. Boat services may be easier for travel than the roads.

    Thanks @vd, that’s most helpful.

    The whole Lake is nice!

Mt Baldo was a nice afternoon, Sirmione was great and the wife enjoyed Limone while I was out on the bike. I took a guide and cycled from somewhere above (and past Lago di Ledro) with great views over the western cliffs of Garda. Are you renting a bike? That is an amazing route.

Verona is worth a couple of days on it’s own too.

We’ll hopefully be hiring bikes for 1 day, and probably book a guided ride for another – depending on costs!  Might have to be an Ebike hire though as the fitness isn’t quite where it should be (damn you English weather!)
I think a day in Verona will definitely be on the cards now too

    Thanks for the suggestions!

There is an old route from the west down to Riva. You have to use it on a bike as the road now goes through a long tunnel, where I think 2 tunnels merge. We rode down at the end of a 7 day circular route. Bar at top perched on a cliff. Lots of full helmet MTBs were coming up. Our group had a couple of beers then set off on road bikes. Brilliant but many were in the Torbole bike shop after for repairs and spares. Quite a few twisted chains, but my bike was unscathed. One of the most stupid/brilliant things I have done on a bike, but best done on someone else’s maybe

We took a boat ride across to limone and wandered around a lemon grove, that was lovely, then across to malcescine where we say outside a bar on one of the squares and people watched with cocktails (Hugo’s – not aperol) Lucky enough to see a wedding party arriving by boat shopping with some buskers, it was all very picturesque.

If you end up in riva, we ate here one evening and it was really good

Castles at Besano (main Adige valley) and the Trento one if they let you see  the frescos in the turret. Up the valley north of Riva: via feratta at Drena, Sarche has a cantina (wine cooperative, nice food too). Nearby are the Brenta Dolomites, if you can organise a jeep taxi up from Dorsino up to a hut there’s fantastic walking there, scenery every bit as dramatic as the eastern Dolomites but without the crowds.

We used to go to the pizzeria in Dro to avoid the crowds.

The mountain biking is relentlessly stoney and it takes a while to adapt.

We get free bikes with the hotel that we’ll use for general pottering around the lake but I’m actually leaning away from ‘proper’ biking and just getting some nice walks and general touristing in for the week – and to get away from England for a bit!

Thanks again for all the input!
