Moving to Newquay.

Our friends are upping sticks and moving from Surrey to Newquay to be mortgage free.
They not only have rose tinted spectacles but a whole outfit that matches.
Where should they avoid?

Lots of cats in Surrey.

Good friends of mine, ex London and Sussex residents, sold up and opened a small hotel there overlooking the beach. They are not regretting it !

Cornwall or Wales?

Steelsreal is right, avoid Newquay, the Blackpool of the South West. Actually it’s about the only place along that coastline that I would avoid living in.

If I were to move anywhere in cornwall, newquay would be very bottom of the list.

Never been what’s wrong with it?
I used to live in Hastings which had a bad reputation. Really friendly people and I loved the place.
Are the naysayers just going by reputation?

not that bad really its only the main town centre thats a bit chav like, got worse over years as more stag/hen parties go there.

no i dont live there just surf there and surrounding areas every year. i would move there but ridings a bit crap personally.

It is what it is. If they are opening a bar or hostel or something then great but to live there would not be a relaxing thing in my opinion. Live just outside somewhere and commute in if work is in new quay but leave living there to the youngsters and stag do’s

I grew up in Cornwall and I’d agree with the “avoid Newquay” comments.

You can’t go wrong with anywhere else in Cornwall, as long as it’s on the coast. Avoid anywhere inland.

It was a mecca for surfing before all the cats starting crapping on the beach……

@zippy, Newquay doesn’t have the romantic charm of a Cornish fishing village but I am not sure I’d want to live in one of those unless I was retired. If your friends are working and have business reasons to be in Newquay then that’s fine. There are many towns all over the UK where you avoid going into the town centre on a Friday/Sat night after 10. Poole has one of the most expensive housing areas in the UK but the town quay is full of drunken chavs by 10pm on a weekend, doesn’t mean you don’t live in the area.

My fiends place is Cliff House btw

They are mid forties with kids from 2 to 17 and will be working.

Lifeguards?

@zippy I think its a good choice, if they want to hedge their bets they can rent. My sister moved to Devon with her kids and they all loved it, she’s only coming back as the kids are all off to Uni now. My friends have gone to avoid the London rat race and I suspect kids will be along in due course, right now they are enjoying the lifestyle with their two Newfoundlands.

Reminds me of an Exeter mate’s comments on the way down to St Agnes for a long weekend. Traffic was chocka with Run to the Sun on in Newquay then clear afterwards.

“I love Newquay” he said, “It’s like a bin for all the people who want to visit Newquay and leaves the rest of Cornwall free for the people like Cornwall.”

Toff stag do’s go to Padstow? Really?

Cornwall should be sterilised and then concreted. It’s nice for three weeks of e year but otherwise is grey with cloud and chuffing windy. Have lived for 8 years west of Truro ( not by choice) and have come to conclusion that it really is the arse end of the uk. Finally escaping, couldn’t come quickly enough

We went to Cornwall 2 years ago. Admittedly we went at a ridiculous time (summer school holidays) Best part of the ‘holiday’ was the drive home & some of the several worst times was trying to get parked for a couple of hours without re-mortgaging the house. (gave up on Newquay)
Oh, & the weather was shit.

Newquay. We’ve just got back from cornwall and I really didn’t like Newquay.

The only good bit was the house on the rock on the beach with the footbridge.

My brother (who adored Cornwall as a kid on summer holidays) managed two years in Truro – after the initial excitement he soon realised that the locals were less than friendly & welcoming, the weather was awful and the locals? Did I mention them already? But yes, they were that bad plus some…

Visit Newquay most years to surf and stay with girlfriends parents 5 miles inland. Town itself is full of stags/hens at weekend, but mon-fri can be quite chilled out, the all week party scene seems to have really died a death compared to its hayday, but then haven’t most seaside towns?

Crantock beach is great to get away from the crowds, or just following the coast road for 20-30 minutes.

Not enough hills to satisfy my biking from the doorstep and for that reason alone I could never live there.

Having been brought up 9 miles down the coast in Perranporth , I would not want to live in Newquay. Tell them to look at Perranporth or St Agnes – much smaller and nicer ( and not as mad in summer )

Really? I’m surprised he found any, everywhere I go down there seems to have been taken over by Londoners and Brummies 🙄

Moving to cornwall – yes
Moving to Newquay – no

South coast is much nicer IMHO, used to live in Penryn and commute to work in Newquay…makes queuing into London seem like a couple of cars…

If they want mortgage free have they looked at Redruth/Camborne – they’ll be VERY mortgage free
