I don’t support Scotch Eggs. It’s worse than veal crates due to the amount of sausage meat, (or black pudding) that they have to force-feed to the chickens.

One of the beauties of the pork pie is that it’s a right slag as far as condiments are concerned and will go with pretty much anything

You need to be a judge on Masterchef, painting pictures with words….

No excuse required to eat them but the heaviest pastry:filling quotient if you’re eating a range of pie sizes as part of a balanced diet.

Yep, it might be heresy but I don’t particularly care for mini pork pies. Too much pastry and not enough filling.

Someone should create pie charts to show how the pastry/filling ratio changes as pie size increases.

Mango chutney is also quite adaptable

Well, you got a lol from me anyway

Can we kill this thread now? I so want a pork pie now and they are of course illegal to take back with me to Brussels 🙁 *

*Actually I’m more upset that haggis now needs to be smuggled but that’s another matter

Someone should create pie charts to show how the pastry/filling ratio changes as pie size increases.

It’s not that hard. For a pie of diameter R, height H (typically H = 2R/3), with crust thickness D, the ratio of meat to pastry is just Ratio = pie*(R-D)^2*(2R/3-2*D)/(pie*(2/3)*R^3) which is approximately 1 – 5*D/R + O[(D/R)^2]. The pie’s cancel (never a good thing), but the function declines monotonically for fixed crust thickness. Unless this is fixed, there is no optimal pie form. A thickness to radius ratio of about 10% that would be 50% filling, falling to 75% if filling is thinner.

I really need a scotch egg, right now. Quartered and then heated in the microwave, not to ‘hot’ but enough to soften the meat a bit.

I think the most disappointed I’ve ever been* was when a work colleague was given the job of bringing the scotch eggs to the test match picnic for the four of us and turned up with mini picnic eggs.

    * joint. The other time was when I found out she’d been wearing a Wonderbra**

** actually scrub that, I’m well over it. The picnic eggs though….

Two pages in and nobody’s mentioned pork pie meat in a scotch pie pastry case. Far better than your southern version! Because the pastry lid is lower than the case you can melt cheese or fill with any condiment you fancy. Forsyth’s in Peebles is a prime example of this far superior pie.

give thanks when it’s a slow day?

sometimes it’s nice to spend the day just thinking about the science. And pies. Didn’t we have a trade agreement argument about pork pies. I can confirm that whilst my American colleagues overfill on turkey, they have no idea what a pork pie is.

If a pork pie has say red onion chutney and blue cheese in place of a pastry lid, does that in fact make it a tart? Just curious

Mini pork pies are always a little disappointing with too much pastry and not enough filling.

My homemade apple chutney has been a revelation when paired with a regular sized pork pie. Still have 2 full jars left so it may last until Christmas

Young man, I’ll have you know that mini pork pies come in packs of 6 and without a gastric band my elasticated waist trousers would be called ankle warmers.

Mini ones I find have a disappointing meat to pastry ratio so go with regular size ones

Yep, I’d rather go fer a slice(or is it a quadrant ?), it the pastry that gets you fat 🙂

I always found it a tad dry for an on-bike snack and hot beers grim.
