Hi, son has a small conservatory, 10′ x 6′ attached to his house. It’s 20+ years old. Upvc frame, double glazed but the roof is simple plastic triangular sheets slotted into the frame. It’s a pitched roof.

The conservatory has very slightly shifted over time, so nothing is quite square. When he gets v v heavy rain, he gets water dripping thru the roof.   A couple of years back, applied roofing tape over the roof struts where the sheets slotted in, and all good.

But leaks have occasionally reappeared, only when v v heavy rain.

Have had a roofer around, and 2 conservatory firms, but understandably they’re not keen to work on it as it’s fiddly, out of square, and old.

Rebuilding is not a financial option for him.

So pragmatic repair…along the lines of putting an additional roof on top, whether some rigid plastic sheeting, car port style, or felt sheets. Doesn’t matter if it blocks the light (an advantage probably). Not sure how feasible to batton onto upvc?

If it can last 5 years then great.

Daft or sensible and advice welcomed (as obvs I’m not a roofer).

If it’s over twenty years old, the problem is most likely that the rubber seals have perished which will definitely cause leaks. The most important thing to remember if you’re going to add additional weight is that the UPVC structure was designed for polycarbonate roof sheets.

Can you post a photo? Without seeing it, my suggestion would be to seal from the inside with clear silicone sealant but seeing a picture would help a lot.

edit, has he identified where it’s leaking? The reason I ask is because the UPVC section is hollow and can hold a significant amount of water.

If he’s not bothered about how it looks go around the joins with 50mm bitumen/flashing tape (on the outside).

what about one of those fake tile roofs that can be retrofitted to a conservatory? A bit more expensive than tape for sure, but should be cheaper than a whole new conservatory

FYI only (*but pros used it to repair my conservatory gutter) See evercryl and acropol paint on stuff. Could try painting all seams. (Or tape them and the acropol the tape down which is what was used on my gutter, no idea what tape was)

I fixed the shed roof using gorillas waterproof patch and seal tape (fixed a plastic keter shed roof) but it’s £12 or so for 3metres, but waterproof and king sticky., so if you could identify the leak areas maybe worth a go with a couple of rolls
