Off abroad next year for the first time in …, well, ages, and I need a car. Last time I went to Javea I used a cheap local firm who we rang up and they met us at the airport personally but things have obviously moved on a bit since then. Flying in to Alicante so airport pickup/return is required.

    What’s the procedure these days?

Do I need to take out supplementary insurance etc from someone other the hirer?

Who is best to use? Alamo? Or rather who to avoid might be a better question…

    Thanks.

We’ve just been to Moraira and used Hertz at the airport. We did take out extra insurance with Questor.

The experience was really good. At the pick up they said, no need to rush out in the dark and look for damage, do it properly in the morning in the daylight and provided a damage report via email. (we still went over it carefully before we left but apart them marking the wrong wheel as kerbed it was accurate).

Drop off was a simple key in a post box which is not immediately obvious but is to the left of the garage Hertz office.

Way nicer experience than some of the cheaper companies that we have previously used.

Avoid the cheapies as they ll rip you off. I used edi when i holidayed here, more expensive but everything is included and they ve been going for ages. I now park my car at airport with victoria cars and they ve yet to rip me off, their base is 5 mins away, hire cars as well.

Avoid at all costs goldcar, theres pages of complaints written about them on local fb groups.

So, does Questor insurance negate the need to get the additional protection from the hire company? looking at Alamo/Avis for example the cost of the hire is almost doubled by the time you add on the insurance – otherwise the excess is something like £2000..

But you still have to pay the excess and then claim it back.

If you take your own hire excess you will be charged the excess in euros and refunded some time later. Any change in the exchange rate is your cost.
