or just work out that you only bought a 4×4 to feel better about yourself and that 2wd and learning to drive is a better option – that and a forester isn’t much special.

No diff lock on it then? Even Mrs ScotRoutes Urban Cruiser has one of those.

the Honda statement is quite clear about how the 4 wheel drive works in real life, Can’t see a problem myself.

I bought a cheap 07 (late previous shape) crv from someone in the trade on the cheap (interior is tatty) but it’s fine as a second car carrying my bikes and dogs about. No poke in it at all which would lead me to realise it’s not really meant as a hardcore 4×4 before it’s been off road. I like subarus but parts cost on a forrestor would put me off as I don’t need a real 4×4, and they are equally as dull as my crv.

Any news on the Landcruiser you were importing?

The updated Honda statement (and comment) on the foot of the page points to a set of circumstances whereas the Kuga immediately adapted/reacted.

IF the CRV is markeded as a AWD or 4×4 then its false. If however its marketed as a car then fine.

A quick glance at Hondas site classes the CRV as AWD.

When I lived in Highland Perthshire, up a dirt track, off a B road, I drove a CR-V and guess what? It worked. Ok, not a landy but that wasn’t what I wanted or needed, and if I was to move back to the wilds, I’d probably get another one.

I drove a Aygo on summer tyres through WYorkshire and European snow.

Also forrester – tractor beam in corners….not quite. Depends what you have been in i guess but it wasnt special.

The Panda 4×4 has a front biased system which auto switches to 4 wheels as soon as the fronts slip

Audis quatro system is also hopeless when tractions lost . I watched one wheel cock in the air while the lass was mounting a ditch…all drive lost.

Land rovers vcu system in the freelander mk1 was similar , detected slip and locked.

Out of intrest were does it state it’s awd? I couldn’t see that but I only glanced over it. I’ve seen it state it’s electric 4wd meaning you can’t select the rear wheels they just engage when the front struggle. I like mine, fuels not great and it’s a bit slow but I bought another car I want to keep clean and the miles off so I’m happy with it. It’s a good but boring work horse.

I’d be as happy in a mondeo, golf and many other things. I did enough in the forester to be assured it just a thirsty car that moves all the wheels at once.

As ive said in th past , you know that many 4x4s are only 2wd under duress,

Unless it has axle lockers, a centre diff only splits the power front to rear , you can still have one wheel stationary on each axle…..

fuels not great and it’s a bit slow but I bought another car I want to keep clean and the miles off so I’m happy with it. It’s a good but boring work horse.

Slow news day? Honda have been making them like this since 95.

Works surprisingly well for what it is.

Ours was a mk1, not sure what they’re trying to achieve by limiting the new models though.

One of my other cars is a 435d xdrive, it seems to work similarly and you can certainly feel the switch from RWD on the rare occasion it’s kicked in.

I’ve never owned a CRV. I’ve driven one and it felt like being sat on 3 matrrsses. I’m on my 2nd forester currently.

I don’t think anyone is angry, just confused at what specific point your trying to make with this thread, other than to suggest a forester is a more capable vehicle (which isn’t really going to be a shock to anyone).

Dull? I really fancied one of these for a while, but was put off by stories of Subaru engines spontaneously imploding and the madly expensive cost to buy. Nevertheless, with around 240bhp, I imagine they’re anything but dull.

Didn’t really read all the CRV article, but I did own a rear wheel biased AWD car for a time, and I can only describe it as incredible in all weathers. I totally loved it.

Had two CRVs. They are Haldex coupled, so no diff lock. In practice, I’ve driven mine over muddy fields and up snow covered hills. The system works fine and you know when the rear drive has kicked in.

Based on my family’s experience, I’d struggle to call Land Rover Freelanders “vehicles” at all. Ours seemed to be forever waiting for another new engine. The Range Rover was no better and has now been off road as in off THE road for a year waiting for a replacement engine. 😉

BTW: The new 1.6 diesel really is 2WD and about 110 kg lighter than the AWD 2.2 version.

I agree with Hora and the Honda response is a joke. The Subaru system is far superior.

Our Freelander 2 happily both zips about town, and charges across deserts and over mountains. It also rescues ‘real’ 4wds such as Nissan Patrols and Toyota Landcruisers. Its rear diff has failed once, which it shouldn’t have, it also had some electrical gremlins affecting the fuel level sender. It’s not perfect, but it seems to do a very good job both off and on road, which is what we bought it for, as it’s our only vehicle.

My Father in Law has bought a 2013 plate one recently. He thinks its only 2wd.

Does it in fact have some 4wd capability? (serious question)

Yes, kind of. It’s FWD but if the front wheels are under duress power is sent to the back also. It’s not manually selectable. I wouldn’t consider it very capable at all as an off road vehicle though if that’s what you meant.
