It would have to be early the road is shut from 6am isn’t it?

The french road closures mean you can walk/cycle as long as you’re well ahead of the caravan – I’m assuming it’ll be the same in Yorks. Can’t seriously imagine anyone being stopped from riding to a viewing point (they’ll need more police than the miners strike to manage that)!

bikes and walkers allowed on closed routes before and after.. remember though that a million folks will be out for the day and progress may be slow..

The NYCC website says that the roads will be shut 1 hour before the publicity caravan arrives. The caravan passes by points approx 2 hours before the race arrives so you can reverse engineer it.

More important will be getting to Buttertubs early enough to get a good spot as it will be rammed.

We are going there too, driving from York to a point away from road closures – thinking Barnard Castle – then a good ride in to enjoy the experience – thinking up over the Stang to Tan Hill then down to Keld and upto Butter Tubs.

Thinking it needs to be very early though to ensure time for ride and to arrive early to get a good spot – thinking 3am!! It will be a good adventure!

Can I ride on the route on the day?You can ride on the stage one and two routes on race days.

The intention is that cyclists and pedestrians will be able to access the closed roads up until the route is handed over to the race organisers. This will be approximately 1 hour before the arrival of the Tour’s promotional caravan.

Once the last police vehicle in the race convoy has passed after the race, cyclists can ride on the route again. The roads will stay closed to vehicles for a period to allow the crowds to leave. When it is safe to do so, official and operational vehicles will come on to the route to remove any infrastructure, clean the streets and collect staff before the road fully reopens.

Normal rules of the road apply, so make sure you cycle on the correct side of the road. Even though the roads are closed to normal traffic, official and operational vehicles and emergency vehicles may be on the route, so be aware. Cyclists should ride safely and responsibly, and be mindful of vehicles, pedestrians and other road users on the route

Any chance of wild camping near top of butter tubs or the top of pike hill on the Friday night before the tour?

I’m imagining that anyone camping at the side of the road is going to get moved on.
