Hi just a quick GPS question. Is there any package where you can live track someone’s GPS/ phone from home? I generally ride alone and my wife would like to know where I am in case of an accident?

    Thanks

Endomondo does this. Your wife would need to be logged on to a PC or similar.

Google Maps – the “Latitude” bit.

you can use the findmyiphone type apps to do it too if you want to stick with Strava.

Be aware that doing a continual live track with a phone will run the battery down more quickly than it just respondign to a ‘where is it now’ ping.

Real Time GPS Tracker does this as well – funnily enough, I just downloaded it yesterday… Not tried in anger yet, but good reviews on Google Play.

Endomondo as said above – just switch to the Endomondo app. Works really well – obviously there may be a delay in updating the tracking info if the 3g signal is lacking or weak – but on the whole it has worked really well for me – even in the FoD “Bermuda” Triangle!

No need to give up on Strava though – just export your gpx files from your Endo account into Strava.

Other option is a Garmin Edge 510 or 810 GPS – links to your smartphone via Blutooth to give live tracking on Garmin Connect website. Gives heart rate, cadence etc so the wife can see if my heart is still beating.

New garmin 810 or 510, they can see exactly where you are and speed etc.
Updated every 30 seconds i think.

Yes – just got a 510 the other day – so far really good – fast updates dependent on phone signal of course. Here in rural Herefordshire that can be large areas lacking mobile reception – but usually not much longer than a few minutes before it’s regained.

as wwaswas as suggested I use ‘Plan B’ for android.

The Mrs McMad just has to test the word ‘locate’ to my phone & then an email is sent to my google account. I then have a forwarder set up for that email to go to hers.

‘Real Time GPS Tracker’ looks interesting but note you do have to have that running on the phone before they can locate you.

Glympse is another good one, you can set it to run for a certain time.

My missus just tracks me using “Find My iPhone” which means I don’t have to have anything specifically running – but yeah ViewRanger has a “BuddyBeacon” and Endomondo does live tracking.

On Android there’s a number of solutions. I use Osmand on my phone which sends data to a spreadsheet on my Google account and then using a map module displays my location on my website. The main problem with this is I want the data to be stored on my website which it isn’t. However you can delete it from the spreadsheet easily enough. Currently trying to find a way to get Mylieu working with WordPress so that everything is stored on my server but this is what I have so far… http://cyclistory.com/my-location. The site’s still in it’s infancy so there’s a long way to go yet. Also looking at using the Mapquest API. At least using these methods I don’t have to register with any website and have someone else in control of my data.

I use LocaToWeb which is a real time tracker that enables my family to follow me while riding. The app gives you duration, speed and altitude directly in the display as well as you position with track line. Your wife can pick up the track from on http://locatoweb.com and watch you live. There she can see your exact location and track line as well as duration, speed and altitude.

The web site also stores your tracks in an archive under your account. Using the app you can be as anonymous as you like since you track under an Alias, and you can even set the tracks to be private (not visible to everyone). Can also capture and upload photos.

Versions for Android, iPhone and Windows Phone.
