I need to get 37 garden steps replaced up our ex-railway cutting garden (15m horizontal x 5m vertical rise).

Does anyone have pictures of railway sleeper sized rise with gravel tread, but with less chunky sides/returns?

Also, I’m presuming that any kind of reclaimed stone or precast concrete will be a lot more than timber…?

Can you get a micro digger that would a) fit up existing steps that are 1m wide and b) work on a 30* slope? Would it be worth hiring it?

Finally, how knackered will I be to install all by myself with hands digging…?

Not sure, but could you pre make a staircase in timber and then offer it up to the incline, securing top & bottom with embedded fence posts? Option of back filling treads with gravel, or use a horizontal tread with deck grip (I’d backfill vertical uprights with gravel personally). ???

This is the kind of thing.

The other issue is that the 15m is not a steady incline. There’s 5 ‘landings’ with path going off.

Timbur is your man, hopefully he’ll see this & chip in 👍
