Everyone eats enough to weigh what they do. The unfair thing is that different people need different amounts of food to maintain a set weight (as my family are discovering). Plenty of lazy thin people, plenty of active fat people.

As for your doctor – clearly has no idea about metabolic variation.

do YOU think a fat person is a lazy person? in general.

if by “in general” you mean as a snap judgement from just seeing someone with no information or prior knowledge of them, then yes. And as a generalised starting point it is a reasonable one.

If I saw a “fat person” (your phrase) out on a bike, or being similarly active, then no.

    I’m fat and lazy 🙂

Unless I’m cycling, eating or drinking (or all three!)

Before I cylcled I was fatter and lazyer 😯

I do what I like in large quantities (see above) and think one cancels out one! Unfortunately there’s three, and eating and drinking cant be a cancel-er 😉

    Thankfully I cycle!

If I played darts or snooker….

Good luck with the op Ton!

3 years ago I was 10 and a half stone. Reasonably fit, cycled trail centres quickly (I lived 10 minutes from coed y brenin), did duathlons etc.
Then I got sick, tried to kill myself a couple of times, got committed and when release put on shit drugs.
These shit drugs took the pleasure of exercise away. Also they have the advantage of allowing me to put weight on while breathing air.
    I’m 15 and a half stone now.
    Does that make me lazy?
Don’t talk shit is my response when they ask.

Skimping on food to pay the bills makes you fat.

Haven’t we covered this before and the STW concensus is –

    Exercise = fitness
    Diet = weight

So fat doesn’t necessarily mean physically lazy.

Yeah, I’ve generally just had an over-eating problem as I’m sure many others do too, whilst still being active and moderately fit. We’re all probably on the ‘would be really slim and lean if only we could eat less whilst maintaining activity levels’.

I guess I’ll be first to admit to thinking a fat person I meet is lazy then.
Often I have been proved wrong .. It is still at the forefront when I initially meet fat people.

It really depends how fat . If you are a little overweight but you can still do all the things you could if you were a little slimmer then that’s one thing . If you are so fat that it stops you from doing things that you want to do then at the very least I would think you are lacking self control and yes I would expect that you are lazy . I know that’s a generalisation and not exactly PC but it’s what it is .

    Comfort eating for me.
Can keep up with most on the bike, but have to work that bit harder.
Not happy with myself, but lack the motivation to do anything about it.
    Vicious circle.

Exactly the same here. Have become a world expert in procrastination as a result!

Lazy and thin here too- I stay thin by doing things I want to do, and not eating too much.

Couple of my colleagues are incredibly hard working and fat, so certainly not lazy. One is actually really active, she just also likes food, and is excellently unconflicted about it all.

I’ve never really believed that it is always as simplistic as less calories in, more out=weight loss.

There must be many other variables.

My g/f used to diet like crazy and never lose weight and then was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. After they started medicating her for this the weight started dropping off.

So it’s obvious that some people can be overweight for medical reasons, I’m sure there’s plenty more that would have this effect.

Not sure why you’d beat yourself up over this Ton , you know you’re not lazy , you do more than most and God knows you’ve had plenty of opportunities to say **** it and give up .One of the things I like about mountain biking is that unlike a lot of sports there’s no defined body shape, you get all shapes and sizes , and some of the most unlikely looking people produce the goods , and as such its very inclusive .just get out and enjoy

do YOU think a fat person is a lazy person? in general.

No, There can be a number of reasons why people deviate from their idealized BMI, sometimes precisely because they are NOT lazy.

I had a good old rant on another thread about how we treat people’s weight issues the other day (and incorrectly identified a tubby TTer as a Pregnant woman, so probably not the best point of reference) but what I said there still sort of stands, as a society we look down on overweight people, and don’t take the topic very seriously, however a growing number of us are overweight now…

I tend to think being overweight is often a byproduct of an “out of balance” lifestyle now, Stress, lack of time, sedentary work, and easy access to high (and often hidden) calorie food.

I love food, not just eating but also cooking, but I’ll admit I don’t make enough time to do it properly and healthily, making me part of the cause for the UK Obesity Epidemic no doubt…

We mostly seem to lead too busy, too pressured, stressful lives in this country, and to a fair extent British people seem to revel in that paradigm these days, the thing is weight issues are a byproduct of that culture IMO…
We’re all too busy being blithe about it, making light of the issues, or writing off fatties as being flawed individuals to actually address why most of us now eat too much and move too little…

I have a sweet tooth that’s almost visible from space and like pretty much any food that’s bad for me, always have. I’m also of no use to man nor beast if I’m hungry so dieting whilst working and being a dad is a challenge.

I’m hardly ‘lithe’ now but if I didn’t ride regularly I’d probably be the size of a family hatchback or half dead from diabetes by now.

Last time I went for a check-up the doctor was genuinely surprised, apparently I’m much fitter than I look, which isn’t hard in fairness but made me feel a bit better.

As for your doctor – clearly has no idea about metabolic variation.

I imagine he/she probably does, but has an attitude that is influenced by the patients. For instance dental caries is caused by acid, which in turn is a product of sugar reacting with the bacteria in your mouth. Eat sugar don’t brush your teeth? Holes. End of discussion. The amount of patients my GPDs see with massive amounts of caries who don’t eat any sugar and regularly brush their teeth is a wonder.

In short most patients will tell clinicians what they think is either the right answer or what they think the clinicians want to hear, hence Tons sceptical doc.

When forumites start treating all eating disorders equally, I’ll stop believing that they are ignorant, thoughtless and small minded.

Until then, I’m quite confident in the conclusions I’ve drawn so far. 🙂

Of course if you can’t be bothered to buy vegetables and rely on your dinner being delivered from the takeaway every night then perhaps lazy does equal fat.

Of course, if you can’t be bothered to think about things and rely on prejudice to inform your thought processes, then perhaps laziness of thought does equal equal ignorance.

How about those with bulimia or anorexia?

    Too lazy to eat?
Why should we bother to fund their hospital treatment?

Why can’t they just EAT something?
Perhaps they should move a bit less?

I think it actually has a similar route cause at the oposite end of the spectrum, where Annorexia and Bulemia are recognized as eating disorders caused by mental health or emotional stress issues, do people ever consider why they are over eating or choosig only “Comfort” foods full of sugar and fat?…

Both ends of the over/under eating scale are triggered by peoples emotional health, lifestyle, social pressures, work/life balance call it what you will if its out of kilter what you eat and the way you eat can easily be affected….

Generally, yes. I know its not always going to be the case but there must be some correlation between the two.

edit – actually it’s probably just inactivity rather than laziness. And lack of eduction when it comes to food choices.

This. Depends what you mean by lazy too.

I’m a skinny bugger, pretty fit, play a whole load of sports, hate sitting still. But I’m on here rather than working and spent half my time watching TV rather than doing stuff at home. Not physically ‘lazy’ but an absolute waster elsewhere.

My best mate is shorter than me, must weigh ten stone more and can’t run a mile. But he works his ass off, is always out socialising, gets home and cooks for hours to create amazing meals. Maybe he’s ‘lazy’ in the physical sense but in every other way he’s so far ahead of me it’s ridiculous.

    Who’s the lazy one?

    ads678

I’ve always been big, but always been active. Never been super fit, but just always done stuff. Cycling, climbing, snowboarding, walking. I just like doing stuff. Apart from running, I hate running.

I weigh 16 stone and am 5′ 9″, so in terms of BMI I am obese.

I could do more and i like beer and food too much so unless i get more motivated i’ll never loose weight. I might be a bit wobbly around the middle and a bit jowly but i also have lots of muscle, arms/shoulders and legs are solid.

I used to do a VERY physical job where i could eat as much as i liked and just burn it off during the day, but now i sit behind a desk mostly and although i don’t eat as much i still like the odd bacon butty.

Lots of builders are a bit fat but they are not what you’d call lazy.

How physically demanding is his job? is he working in the old fashioned sense of the word working … or sat on his arse behind a desk?
Yes, I agree it is work .. but sat behind a desk isn`t exactly burning the calories is it. Even a very very lazy person could manage to do that.
And out socialising does not exactly mean he is burning the calories either, especially if its sat on his arse again with a pint and plate of curry in front of him.

That’s a perfect example of my point. He might not be physically active, but he’s constantly doing ‘stuff’ – even if it is sat behind a desk. I’m sat behind mine browsing STW. He sits behind his working. And he’s still ‘lazy’?

he has asked if i was being serious because i did not look like a cyclist

Somebody I know in passing said something similar to me the other day when they found out I’m a keen cyclist. I explained that I pedal with my legs not my stomach.

I wouldn’t consider myself lazy but I do like beer.

You get fat when your calorie intake is more than you use, this does not make you lazy.
I am sure there are fat lazy people as there thin lazy people.

We as a nation are getting fatter due to snacking and fast food.
In the not to distant past you had breakfast around the table before work , took a packed lunch and then had an evening meal around the table and not much else.

Now people eat a lot of crap when ever it takes their fancy.
Trouble is lots of what is not the healthiest option is so damn tasty and quick and easy.
You have to excercise self control as it is very easy to put on weight if you are not carefully about what you eat.

As a point of order. The medic concerned didn’t accuse ton of being lazy, he was just sceptical of his stated physical activity level.
