Dark City – was overshadowed by the Matrix

Recommended in another thread the other day, but I’ll do so again on the basis that it’s a very good film:

    Un prophète.

My wife has just told me that Muriel’s Wedding is such a film. I hope she’s right as we’re watching at 8:40 on Arte.

    Jan Svankmeyer’s Alice:

Well worth getting the DVD. Brilliant, probbly the best film adaptation of the book ever made.

The Big Blue (or Subway, or Nikita, or Leon – basically any of Luc Besson’s earlier films).

Just reminded me how brilliant The Big Blue is. Compulsory student viewing for me in the nineties.

    One of my favourites too.
If we’re not stuck on Hollywood films, I highly recommend Diva, a very stylish thriller by Jean-Luc Godard.

Diva! Bingo, someone else has heard of it. Huzza. Love that film, bought the book recently, and there’s not much the same really. Prefer the film, really. Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid is another I really love, quite possibly the only Steve Martin film I’ve ever found funny.

The Fall – a decent story, but the visuals are what make the film as they are superb.

I’ve seen Down By Law, I even remembered the icecream quote before reading down the thread. Can’t remember anything else about it though except that it’s got Tom Waits in it, so -1 for me.

From round about the same period (my college days) how about The Element of Crime, come on, bet no one else has seen that?

Me too, have it on VHS & DVD one of those films that just stays with you IMO

Well Muriel’s Wedding was a delightful film in a colourful, black humour sort of way.

Dark City – Saw it on TCM a few nights. Amazing visuals.
    Delicatessen
    Eraserhead
    Tin Drum

I liked Gattaca the first time I saw it but it lays it on a bit thick with the downside of genetic tailoring.

Quite liked Nightwatch (no not the one you think) not got round to seeing daywatch yet

+1 and do try and see Daywatch (was on Film4 a few months ago) – it continues Anton’s story with his son, Yegor, and explores the whole Light One / Dark One universe a lot further. The effects are a lot better too – without ruining the grimy feel of the film.

I’d say Dark City was overshadowed by the Matrix because it’s really clunky compared to the Matrix.

Kiefer Sutherland is awful in it, in fact none are the performances are very good!

Inland Empire is a stunning film. It’s David Lynch, so probably not right to say it was under the radar, but I get the impression Lynch is less appreciated these days than in his prime. Think he struggled to get it funded from what I recall.

Bizzarely, I think I was watching that as you posted. Agreed, a very interesting film. I think “The world according to Garp” is a film that I’d like to watch again and is quite unsung.
