  • Ex Display TVs – Would you buy one?

So my local electrical shop has a heavily discounted Sony TV that I’ve had my eye on for some time, but it’s an ex-display model.  It will come with a 5yr warranty – but would you / should I buy it?

Edit – my current TV is 13 years old, I’m not buying just because it’s cheap (ish)

We’ve bought reconditioned telly’s before now from independent electrical shops.
If the shop gives you a decent guarantee/warranty then I would purchase it.

It depends on how much the discount is but with a 5 year warranty? Probably.

no. because there’s no way you could, with 100% confidence, say your TV has never shown “Mrs Brown’s boys” or “GB news”.

I would, assuming it has no visible damage.

I bought one from John Lewis about 8 years ago.

It’s still working fine, no longer my main TV and doesn’t get used much but it was for 6 years and used everyday.

As long as being a display model doesn’t affect the warranty, yes.

My LG TV had the panel showing purple hues in different spots, 4 weeks before the John Lewis warranty ran out. Exchanged no problem.

I bought an ex display Samsung 43 LED in 2016.   It was replaced by Sky Glass a year ago, when I put it up for sale for £60.  Another one wanted it hence it’s still here right in front of me now acting as my monitor in my home office.

My personal preference is tracking down a reliable customer returns seller on ebay, I found a returned OLED, ebay account had the same address as the Panasonic outlet. 48″ last years model for £600 less than last years retail and about £800 less than the (effectively same product) 2023 screen.

I’ve only had it 2 months, but it was flawless and seems to work perfectly.

I would if it was from a company like Richer sounds , but it would need to be a BIG discount if its the likes of Currys etc where a lot of tire kickers might have had their sticky mitts all over it.

If its an OLED, check the store provided warranty covers image retention and burn -in…

If it’s ex display it could have been showing static content a long time, such as a Sky or BBC news ticker…which is not great for OLED screens.

I’d check the warranty carefully. “It has a warranty” doesn’t mean squat if it has a list of exclusions longer than Santa’s Naughty List.

Open box maybe, ex display no. That’s an awful lot of “on time” at maximum brightness you’re getting.

as long as there’s no dead pixels (which as it’s a display model it probably won’t) I can’t see what the problem is.

Just ask to play with the smart interface to see if you like it and if it works glitch-free, will also make sure they have the remote

Ex Display TVs – Would you buy one?

Absolutely. I bought one that was massively discounted because of a fault with the volume control… I couldn’t turn it down
