Dealing with right wing newspaper readers.

Somebody who believes that foreigners, and gay people are taking over the country, that the conservative party has been appointed by god to run the country on its behalf,(god being an entity, and not a real physical presence),that anyone out of work especially if they had a manual type job, is a benefit scrounger, anyone off sick is a scrounger, and that pensioners are treated terribly, that the nhs is a private hotel for them, (they soon realise when admitted that this is wrong), that cyclists are the spawn of the devil put there to be screamed at when theyre on the road, that every man is a potential paedophile, except the one theyre sleeping with, that when theyre stopped for speeding or given a ticket for illegal parking they always say why dont hey catch real criminals.
Finally why is there always a herd of them at any public gathering, cafe, workplace etc, even some bike rides.
Help required as euthenasia is still illegal.
RustySpannerFull MemberI have some ‘Tory’/right wing mates, but in certain situations, just occaisionally, that depth of shared feeling and experience just isn’t there on some subliminal level.
It’s not deliberate, just the way things work out.
I knock about with a hugely diverse group of people – mostly, I’ve no idea of their politics or views.Political, social and philosophical outlook affects how you live your life, be it appreciation of art & literature, how you deal with problems, even how you deal with relationships, but it’s not a deal breaker when it comes to friendship.
I find those with little or no empathy toward others tend, just tend mind, to be those with more right wing views.
Not all right wingers are like this of course, just as not all lefties are models of sympathy and understanding.
But there does tend to be a fundamental difference in how people see life which relates to social, philosophical and political outlook.Best not to worry about it really – people turn out differently for a myriad of complicated reasons.
I reckon the trick is not to judge them on what they say they believe, but on how they act and behave as individuals. But if they are your basic mindless idiot, as described, just ignore them – plenty of decent people out there 😀
bencooperFree MemberNice walk in the countryside, shovel, shallow grave, job done.
Arguing with them is pointless, just quietly knock off as many as possible.
ADFull MemberIgnore them.
Alternatively post on singletrack drawing attention to how superior you are?
Or better yet just share some of your opinions with them – you’ll drive them nuts 🙂khaniFree MemberI find a couple of sieg heils does the trick…
Then agree about the dirty immigrants coming over here claiming benefits taking all our jobs having never worked a day in their lives….JamieFree MemberPersonally, it’s the whiney left wingers that fanny about reading the Guardian that do my nut.
elzorilloFree MemberI find them to be excellent company and always up for a laugh..
Luckily I dont often mix with students, the unemployed or public employees in my leisure time so rarely have to associate with leftie types. The few I am forced to spend time with are terrible bores though.. each and every one of them a clone of the other and resoundlingly blinkered in their views.
Although this forum seems to collect them like flies around.. well.. flies around lefties actually.
mikewsmithFree Memberbe glad they can read, I heard most of the commoners only look at the pictures
WoodyFree MemberI find that on the rare occasion I read a ‘right wing’ newspaper, I treat the content exactly as I do those with a ‘leftie bent’ ie. with a very large pinch of salt and don’t feel the need to post an intolerant, generalised rant on an MTB forum in the mistaken belief that I am much more clever and ‘correct’ than them.
Somewhere in the middle lies the truth…………………….maybe 😉
RustySpannerFull MemberWoody, I agree, but the Indy is soooooooo boring. 😀
I prefer the Telegraph, tbh.
It generates enough self righteous indignation to see me through the day AND it’s great at the non political stuff. 🙂
Know thine enemy, eh?jonbaFree MemberI think with newspapers the distinction is not right or left but tabloid and broadsheet.
As above everything you read will reflect the bias of the author.
This forum does seem to collect a good deal of angry lefties although it has got better of late in that regard.

The forum doesn’t collect anything.
It’s merely a reflection of the opinions of those who can be arsed to post.As someone of a leftist background I’d say it represents a fine collection of frothers of all persuasions.
patriotproFree MemberWhat’s the point of the OP anyway? The title doesn’t correspond to his/her/your accompanying rhetoric/waffle.
kimbersFull Memberapparently it takes all sorts i bet they are the muppets that watch x-factor/strictly etc
reading the talkbacks on the daily telegraph/mail etc is a gut wrenching reminder of how unpleasat some people are
JamieFree Memberapparently it takes all sorts i bet they are the muppets that watch x-factor/strictly etc too
Comfy up there, Kimbers?
unklehomeredFree MemberI used to work with people who would read right wing red tops, and believe every word, and often spout it back out verbatim in the lunch queue. They would often seem incredulous I didn’t believe any of it unless I knew of corroborating evidence, or it wasn’t insane etc…
I don’t think the politics is main the thing. People of all persuasions will often believe anything they’re told. But some people seek out more disturbing forms of nonsense to believe…

Oh, how very, very true! My sentiments exactly. 😀konabunnyFree Memberforeigners, and gay people are taking over the country
Fingers crossed… 😉
JunkyardFree MemberIT depends how right wing they are whether I an be arsed engaging with them tbh.
Many have little empathy and little information so it is pointless to challenge them. I often find the best thing is to be very left wing and PC as this annoys the hell out of them – elzorillo I think this is what is happening to you tbh as they see you as beyond redemption and effort so they wind you up as it pointless challenging you.
I dont care much whether folk are right or left wing but the heartless ones I have little time for – all doleys are lazy, prison is like a holiday camp, immigrants are eating our swan types. there are often not very bright IME [ that is just for Jamie to froth at 😉 ]Funny that the ratio of right v left on here [ STW and this thread] is fairly even but only the right wingers are saying this place is left wing.
If they were like the OP describes i would just avoid or challenge till one of us got bored. Serious racism and homophobia is something i will never let pass and I could not be friends with someone who held those views. thankfully the Public sector is full of lefties leaving the right wing to be the engine of society and the creators of the wealth that we all require to implement our left wing agenda apparently.
Gawd Bless emThe few I am forced to spend time with are terrible bores though.. each and every one of them a clone of the other and resoundlingly blinkered in their views.
I do aspire to be have the level of openess you have towards the left in my views of right wingers 😕 OH the ironing
deludedFree MemberPersonally, it’s the whiney left wingers that fanny about reading the Guardian that do my nut.
+1 – particularly the holier than thou, moralising witless twerps on their pedestals who let what they loathe define them.
Politically I consider myself a moderate, neither Left, Right or Liberal – I feel unrepresented by what’s on offer.
JamieFree Memberforeigners, and gay people are taking over the country
*crosses fingers*
JunkyardFree Memberparticularly the holier than thou, moralising witless twerps on their pedestals who let what they loathe define them
You seem to be letting what you loathe define you.
Its quite funny how the most vociferous haters of the left seem to display, but from a right wing view, the same attitude they deplore.I guess that says something about humanity rather than politics as i certainly know lefites who do the same.
deludedFree MemberJY – I’m not the one that keeps popping up on this sort of thread whining and moaning, (that’s not aimed at you, either) but there really is a pompous element on here that get on my T***. And I find left / right debates tedious and feel disappointed with myself for dipping in thus far.
JunkyardFree MemberNo the cap fits me to some degree- well I do engage in the politics threads.
i think those with strong views just like debating this stuff and it annoys others more than them/us.RustySpannerFull Memberdeluded – Member

See, this is the problem.
Decent, honest, moral people are just ignored. You don’t count in the minds of those who make decisions.
Those with power seek more power and will constantly attempt to exploit those without unless someone tries to stop them.
Acquisitive human behaviour I’m afraid, basic design flaw.
In a capitalist democracy the powerful will do increasingly inhuman and nasty things to those with less power unless annoying, whiny lefties try to redress the balance. 😀We all know that democracy is a fine and just institution.
But the flawed concept of a totally free market means that a minority benefits at the extent of a the majority.
Surely what we want is the best outcome for the most people?Which means that the left and the right have to be ultimately accountable to those nice, decent and honest people in the middle who, unfortunately, can’t actually be arsed to do anything. 😀
deludedFree Memberunfortunately, can’t actually be arsed to do anything.
Rusty – You might be right. The shower in the HoP have left me totally apathetic.
GweiloFree MemberThe worst problem with the lefties, is the holier than thou attitude some adopt. I find nothing funnier than a champagne socialist defending their huge house, shiny New Mercedes Benz, manipulation of the education system and tax avoiding tendencies. All because they can’t admit they’re really as greedy and grasping as their rightie equivalent and just want to feel better about themselves 😉
The red tops play to lowest common denominator and as Woody said the truth is somewhere in the middle, whats concerning is how many people take them as gospel.
Junkyard – I agree with you serious racism and homophobia can’t be allowed to pass and anyone with those views can go boil their head, I want nothing whatsoever to do with anyone with those views. my wife has been on the receiving end of casual racism for years – including from a***holes that claimed to be friends.
That said casual racism toward eastern Europeans seems to be acceptable at the moment. how long before we get a re-working if “Love Thy Neighbor” (That dates me) I wonder?
OP was it you that was bitten by the rabid spider yesterday or are you the just leftie equivalent of a Daily Mail reader?
JunkyardFree MemberTo some degree that is what the system is designed to do, make us think we cannot influence it or change it.
Clegg, Cameron or Milliband – not one of them I feel any love or affinity with tbh and not much to choose between them either in upringing or outlook. The worst problem with the lefties, is the holier than thou attitude some adopt.
Your right they should just admit they are selfish and self centred and think only of themselves rather than the greater good. I mean who is not like that RIGHT?
I dont get that attack tbh or the high horse, some folk have principles just deal with it rather than insult them.
I dont think you have to be poor to care though it is easy to criticise them.KevevsFree MemberI think, difficult as it is, to be accepting of arseholes. There are bloody loads of them in all parts of life AND THERE IS LITTLE YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
davidjones15Free MemberRight wingers?
Narrow minded, blinkered, bigoted idiots the bloody lot of them. They are all just oxygen thieves and you’ll never convince me of anything else.JamieFree Memberso where did my post go then?
Temporarily swallowed by the glitch*
