They have John Smiths that’s like a southern beer.

A yard of the drip trays for that blasphemy!

How dare you suggest John Smiths is a beer

    I didn’t. I said it’s like southern beer.

Really? Tastes like the sort of weak piss you’d expect some flat-capped Yorkshireman to be nursing in his local, hiding from the rain.

😀 Haven’t heard that one in a while!

    Yup, southern beer. 😀

Ah! We’re talking about the same thing, just relative to current location 🙂

Anyway, there are some very nice Cornish beers. Granted that’s also north of my current location, but for the purpose of this thread I’m ignoring that minor detail.

Of course there’s good beer through out the country which is great. My comments were in the context of my conversation last night with mrlebowski.

Mind you, I made that mistake with Brewdog.

Brewdog is one of my all time favourite breweries – as much for their attitude towards brewing as for the beer itself!

    See, that’s the thing.

I love Brewdog, or at least, what I know of them via their Marketing arm. I like their designs, the attitude, and the fact that they seem to be doing something a bit more fun and different from most other brewers.

But. I’ve yet to find a beer of theirs that I actually like, which is a bit of a deal-breaker. Though granted, I’ve only tried a few of them so far.

I’ve been lucky enough to be able to attend 3 Brewdog beer tasting sessions and tried a fair few of their beers (including some that cost £10+ per bottle!) Some of the darker beers especially are excellent. Dog C is exceptionally flavoursome. That said I also like the beers that you can get everywhere (especially Dead Pony). Granted they’re not really a “six pints down the local on a Friday night” brewery!

I find the opposite with BrewDog. I like their beers but I find their ‘attitude’ a bit contrived and trying too hard.

I like Brewdog beers dead enjoyable easy to drink beers, I like some of their marketing too. I’ll gladly ignore the the marketing that irritates me and still drink their beer.

I like Brewdog beers, they’re also relatively easy to find in Madrid which is a bit of a winner. Mind you, the only contact I’ve had with their marketing is the bottle label.

Their beers are great, and Dead Pony is one of my favourite beers (not just of theirs), but reading the label just now, it just seems like they now believe their own hype, which was a pile of stick-it-to-the-man bullshit in the first place. It was funny for a while. I just don’t read their labels anymore as it would put me off buying the stuff. Anything which finishes with “…Beer like it was. Beer like it will be. Ditch the mainstream and say hello to BrewDog” (yes, so not-mainstream I can buy it in Sainsburys, sometimes even for £1.50 a bottle) needs a new copywriter. 🙂

Not to mention they export to the continent, hardly a small-scale-stick-it-to-the-man operation these days!

True, but I don’t think you can really condemn them for being successful as long as they stick to their original ethos. Of course if they do a Sharp’s Doom Bar and sell out then I’ll re-evaluate (can’t really see that happening though!)
