Never a dull day in US politics these days

I think as long as they don’t have a shoe in for Harris they have some good potentials to choose from .

A new candidate could be seen as a “change” candidate and cast Trump as the “”doddery old man”.  Let’s hope so.

I really feel for the guy but do feel like he’s done the right thing.

A crap situation all round, he deserved a 2nd term, he was a decent man and a solid president, but age just caught up with him at precisely the wrong moment.

He just put his country before himself , and that should be what he’s remembered for.

The elections not until November so plenty of time.  Lets see if they can pick a decent candidate.  I am not sure about Harris but the VP is very much a non job so its hard to be sure.

Newsome is th eotyher I have seen mentioned but he seems a bit smarmy but I do not know enough really to tell

I just wonder what his family were thinking.

I wouldn’t want any of my family running for anything that stressful beyond retirement,  let alone being statistically incredibly close to death

Well thank **** for that, I think the final nail in the coffin was the endorsement by the Clintons.

No 80+ man (or woman) “deserves” the presidency and he was clearly no longer up to the job (let alone, adequately up to the job for the next 4.5 years). The right decision, could have been quicker but at least it’s done now.

Can’t see Harris winning, cos she’s a black woman.  But I think they have to keep her on the ticket otherwise they can’t use the funding raised.

Newsome is the other I have seen mentioned

The awkward thing is that with Harris presumably on the ticket that means that both of them with be from California, which would be almost unthinkable.

does his endorsement of Harris mean anything? She does not seem popular from anything ive read but I am seeing suggestions that there is an issue with using the campaign money for the Biden/Harris 2024 campaign being used on anyone else if it isn’t Harris?XXXX

The elections not until November so plenty of time.

    107 days.

Depends how long they spend deciding on the new candidate and how damaging the campaign is. If they are going into the battle with Trump with only 50 days to go bleeding from open wounds, I’d say they are stuffed.

It’ll be fascinating to see what the process turns out to be to choose who ever it is and how much has already been decided behind the scenes before this announcement.

I think an awful lot less of Biden for making this announcement over X. This should have been done as a live video announcement unless he is literally on his death bed.

Newsomes problem is that California is being presented as a bit of a basket case to the rest of the US in the mainstream media, and that image does look like it is sticking.

IMO California is suffering because of the federal governments nationwide policies causing homelessness, mental illness, crime and drug dependence, California is hardest hit because of “Dick Whittingham” syndrome, people flock to California, and especially LA and SF because of the myth that they can be rich and famous.

But they are never going to admit the reality of the failure of the american dream, so they will paint California and Newsome as self made failures.

but I am seeing suggestions that there is an issue with using the campaign money for the Biden/Harris 2024 campaign being used on anyone else if it isn’t Harris?

The money had already dried up, the usual backers were so unimpressed with Biden.

On the one hand, if they are savvy, the Dems can pick someone with a very good chance of winning.

On the other, the Republicans are stuck with a total piece of shit who lost the last election

Yeah, as much as I think he’s reasonably decent, he should have been put out to pasture to some golf club/retirement complex about ten years ago.

Aside from sheer ego, why on earth would someone whos clearley quite well off, want the stress of running a country at that age?

Same goes for trump, I suppose.

If the dems can field a fresh(er) faced, non crazy candidate with a bit more energy, we could see things change quite fast in the polls.

About time. Harris can do it. Trump anti abortion, his running mate even more so. You can’t take it while alienating half the population.

Trump is primarily running to stay out of prison, if he loses his political following his protection dissapears.

Thing is. This man, Mark Kelly is an actual Democrat and he’s not a hundred and elventy two. Read his Wikipedia page, Americans eat that shit with a spoon, I don’t understand why they didn’t pick him from the get go.

Kackling Harris is going up against Trump?! She doesn’t stand a snowball in hell’s chance. Awful woman. Trump’s a shoe-in.

The short timeframe could – will hopefully – be a big plus. The candidate won’t be tarnished by an endless campaign and Trump’s nicknames by that point. I really hope Biden will be able to distract Trump by saying “I’m too old – and so are you, you old dinosaur”. The more he can do that, the more Trump and Biden get paired as yesterday’s men together, and in contrast to whoever gets the D nomination.

I just wonder what his family were thinking. I wouldn’t want any of my family running for anything that stressful

His wife and son were – reportedly – the ones telling him to keep plugging away at it. His son is looking at the wrong end of a criminal conviction – having your father in position to commute your sentence (he already said he wouldn’t pardon him) would be mighty handy.

    Phew.

I think the Dems have a fighting chance now. The anti Trump vote could well be big enough to keep him out of office with a bit of luck.

How the MAGA lot would take that loss is another matter…

Biden? Duty? To keep Trump out (again)? Personally, I think it was clear 4 years ago that the public couldn’t be asked to elect him to run the country up to 2028, and the Democrats should never have entertained putting him up for re-election.

Trump? Revenge? To beat the legal system? To change the legal system? I genuinely fear he wants to reframe what democracy means.

A bit off topic, but how come Biden is using his own Xitter account? Is it just the trend that Trump set, or did Trump seige the potus account?

    Awful woman.

Ah, I know nothing about Harris but if meets with grimep’s disapproval she has probably said and done some reasonable stuff. I need to learn more about her!

    From CNN:

Exclusive: Trump responds to Biden dropping out
    From CNN’s Kaitlan Collins
In a phone call with CNN minutes after President Joe Biden announced his exit from the 2024 race, former President Donald Trump described Biden going “down as the single worst president by far in the history of our country.”

While it’s unclear who the Democratic nominee will be, Trump said he thinks Vice President Kamala Harris will be easier to defeat than Biden would have been.

    Trump being trump.

    Trump’s a shoe-in.

This is a sentiment that has been expressed many times recently, and I think we will see it many times before November. Only time will tell whether the prediction is correct. But in these difficult times, I think it’s important for us all to agree on one thing despite our differences:

    The expression is “shoo-in“.

Always thought he should have been a 1 term president and then let Harris have a full run up at the election. Could potentially have led into Democrats in power for 12 years and really get something progressive  done.

Hope they don’t rue the circus of the last month. They could have had Dump on the ropes for his perpetual lies in the TV debates wirh someone sharper to fire back actual facts.

Bit like Blair overstaying his welcome and handing the job to Gordon Brown too late.

I would guess because its a personal/party announcement vs something as president. Obviously line is somewhat blurred but, for example, in the UK there are restrictions on how a politician can use governmental resources for party political purposes which include announcing standing or not for election.

    J-R

then let Harris have a full run up at the election.

Unfortunately Harris is woefully unpopular and when Trump says she’ll be easier to beat than Biden I suspect he’s right.  It may not be fair or nice, but that’s the situation and the overriding priority is to keep Trump out.
