got an old guitar ..nothing special but with a nice action /sound . the machine heads are a bit ropey though and i’d like to replace but don’t want to spend too much . is there a reliable make which is relatively inexpensive but holds things in tune nicely?
    thanks

try allparts or axesrus, both can be googled quite easily, you don’t really need to spend more than about 30/40 quid to get a really decent set, although you can spend less, you need to allow a bit of luck to get a usable set for much less, as consistency can be a bit patchy on budget heads from one pack to the next.

Make sure they are all consistently assembled and tightened,If they are a covered mechanism…..cheap or expensive, before you fit ’em, pack the mechanism out with vaseline or copper grease and they’ll hit and hold the correct pitch a lot better as well.Check the internal diameter of the holes before you order as well, if they flap about in the holes, they’ll struggle to hold pitch, just but the right size in the first place.
